About halfway through this one - I had that...odd gut-twisting feeling. This anime to me was just bizarre, really. The story centers on Satou Matsuzaka, a deceptively ordinary high-school girl who isn't so ordinary, as is revealed in the very first few minutes of the anime that she jumps off of a burning building with a little kid. As the first episode progresses, you can evidently begin picking up on details that she is mentally ill. But it only gets worse as it goes on. The most amazing part about the show is how it manages to hide everything so well when it needs to, but the undertones still lurk around, as more and more of the cast slowly descend into madness.
The story isn't exactly perfect but it isn't really striving to be. It's aware of its own flaws and how ridiculous things sound and I really enjoy how it can sometimes take entire episodes to dedicate to a plot hole brought up in a previous one, the most notable example being episode 8. A wonderful episode in my opinion as it uses sound and visuals to its advantage to portray the very messed up nature of the anime. It was great and is worth watching the entire anime just for that one episode alone.
There are things I did not enjoy though. One of the many things that stick out is how it seemingly throws characters away, never bringing them up but then keeps others who were just as inconsequential as the characters preceding them. And some of the story arcs are a little bit sloppy and non-sensical, especially the last couple of episodes where Satou attempts to talk about what she did. It's very downplayed and felt rushed in the sense of how quickly things started to develop. The next most underwhelming thing was the ending. Not gonna lie, the ending genuinely felt like all of their efforts went to complete waste and leave me longing for more on what happens next instead of acting as the proper conclusion I sought after. It's fine, it's whatever, but I ended up being disappointed after being so heavily invested in the show.
Do I recommend watching this? God yes. While not exactly perfect, it doesn't strive to be. It has genuinely great examples on how to properly do "filler" to explain story details. I like its "no prisoners" approach to the story - if it leaves some story details behind, it'll definitely explain it later. That's how it should be done and the way the episode time is used is very resourceful.
