Selector Infected WIXOSS...I'll give you a quick review of what I thought of this anime!
First Impressions: Wow, a card game...I had no idea whether or not I would find this pleasant. Fortunately, it turned out well.
Story --------- 20/25 ---------
In terms of story, there isn't really life-changing about it. Okay, it's a game that girls play, and it grants wishes (reminds you of another anime huh?), which is something that isn't too original but it gets by. The thing that does get the rating for this category higher than what it would have been is the pleasant plot twists that appear throughout the series, particularly the one that happens at around episode 8 or 9. Those kinds of surprises are really nice, and keep the story fresher than normal!
Animation & Art --------- 10/15 ---------
The animation for this show is decent, but it isn't anything special. I won't make any comments about budgets, but we can just say...that it could have been better animated. It isn't detrimental in any way though, but it doesn't go above the average mark in terms of animation. The art and standstills are well done though - up close that is. Far away figures are not drawn that well unfortunately.
Sound --------- 17/20 ---------
The opening song is, subjectively, really catchy, and I found it to be one of my more liked songs in recent times. The soundtrack itself in the anime didn't really present itself very well, but again, it wasn't detrimental to the sound factor. I would have to say though, that the music used in the last 2 or 3 episodes really do stand out more - a good sign on that. The ending song is okay in my opinion, but the cool part is that there are different versions used in different episodes! (Same song, but different instrumentation etc.) Overall, decent!
Characters --------- 22/25 ---------
You start this series off by not really knowing about anyone (obviously) except for the main character, and boy does it take time to get to know the other characters - deeply that is. You get introduced to nearly all the characters within the first few episodes, but you don't really learn much about some of them until the latter half of the show. I thought the character development in this anime was really good and smooth, though how long it took to get to the point it wanted to show was a bit longer than I would have expected. As the other reviewer said, it is a bit of a hassle to get through the middle episodes now that I think about it, but it wasn't that bad when I was actually watching it!
Enjoyment --------- 14/15 ---------
Whilst watching through this anime, I could see that there were many problems with it, or more like...small things that may irritate perfectionists (similar to me), but the action and the results of the card games, the wishes the girls had, and the dialogue between the characters (and the mysteries of course) all kept me hooked to the show. For finished animes (watched in October), this has been the fastest time I've finished an anime (2 days) in over a year. Yes, I also had school. It's just really good.
Verdict: If you're a fan of Madoka, watch it. To be honest, I personally liked this anime more than Madoka (for some reasons of course), but nonetheless, you should be watching it. If you aren't a Madoka fan, watch it anyways if you can get past an average-level animation and survive some epic plot twists! I greatly look forward to the second season, "Selector Spread WIXOSS"
Overall: 83/100 B
