Honestly, it's a really bad anime. Not because it isn't "historical", has no character development or some other idiocy people say.
Story, character development, characters themselves, history related events/traits of characters are not that bad for average japanese product.
Main problem here is that it is a really, REALLY bad adaptation. They put what, 800-1200 pages of source material in 12 episodes. They skipped whole arcs. For example, at one episode we have blonde girl running away from France military because her brother was against fighting on the France side and she failed to bring reinforcement from him, only for the next episode starting with her brother going at battle as a general to bring victory to France himself. When, how, why? What happen between these 2 events? Why he changed his opinion so much? There no explanation. And problems like that are all over the story.
Imagine something like Stein's Gate and Stein's Gate 0 being put in one season with 12 episodes. It would have been a total mess as well.
Well, it doesn't mean that story itself is without any problems. My main story-related problem is a protagonist usselessness. He is an alchemist, with more than 7 years of practice. In his childhood, in the very first episode, we saw him throwing some pepper x something else mix at soldiers to blind them. Yet in the rest of the story he is never end up using any kind of alchemist potions. He is a knight, yet he is never fighting with a sword (no matter how weak he is). He also no strategy genius. He is just walking moral support. This changed in the last 3 episodes, but there wasn't much of fighting before he turned into an elf gigolo.
My second big problem is between story and adaptation quality. Why exactly characters spend so much time talking and fooling around in the middle of the battle. Sure, it's pretty old anime cliche, but in this very show there several moments when someone getting hit/shot while talking, breaking "theatrical immersion" of such cliche.
There some average minor problems as well, like animation quality, shitty 3d models of the soldiers in the back ground, questionable ending that has no tone relevance to the show. Or source material-related problems like spaceships. But it's all irrelevant at this point.
If it was a better adaptation, it would have been a decent anime. Not unique or great, but decent. Sadly, it would never happen now.
