About “I want to eat your pancreas” in general“I want to eat your pancreas” is the anime-adaptation of eponymous novel by Yoru Sumino. It was premiered on September 1, 2018. There is also a live-adaptation of the novel called “Let me eat your pancreas” premiered in 2017, but this review is only about anime-film.
PlotSpring. April. Last days, when cherry blossoms. An aloof boy which name was mystery till the end of the movie finds a diary of his popular classmate Sakura Yamauchi in hospital waiting room which is called “I live dying” due to her fatal pancreatic illness. Sakura has few months of life remaining. He becomes the only person in class who knows about Sakura’s illness. But Sakura doesn’t even feel upset and decides to spend last days with him and maximally funny and unforgettable. They play games, travel, find adventures and He notices the changes inside him. He becomes more open and started socializing which we can see in some interesting details: he accepts a gum from his classmate (when in the past he ignored everybody) and starts talking to Kyoko even if she doesn’t like the mysterious relations between Him and Sakura.
The way how bright person can change another opposite to her and closed person is insanely catching, especially after reading deep plays (“At the bottom”) and stories (“Konovalov”) of Maxim Gorky where he develops high idea of human’s grace and greatness. It became interesting to me to discover human connections and bonds, but let’s end with the plot.
When He totally changes and becomes easy-going and open person, he calls her to have a dinner together. Sakura gets discharged from the hospital and goes to the café, but on the way, she was murdered and He knows this only after hours of waiting…
It is indisputably good when person changes to the better, but it is bad when he gets attached to a person, especially when he knows about her destiny after some months… When he knows about the murdering, his inner world crushes fundamentally, depression and helplessness attack his heart and feelings. He reads a diary that she kept for him and in the end of the film, he becomes friend with Kyoko and they visit Sakura’s grave together…
Expressions about music
That is pure masterpiece, when anime-film can touch viewer’s feelings only with two songs – “Fanfare” and “Shunkashuto” by Sumika. Second one is very powerful and makes you feel the loss of close friend who you loved, it makes you think about future and further destiny of the characters. Seemingly, characters and their images are not real, they are fruit of author’s imagination, but you continue building various variants of their future and understand that end of the film leads to internal devastation and desire to know out how their life went further! The most scaring thing that you will never exactly know how did everything go…
Expressions about the ending
Good anime has references to music, books, films, etc. Graceful anime has harmonic references to music, books, films, etc. This anime-film is graceful in the point of connection between film and “Little prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. The ending where two main heroes meet among the planets from the Universe of “Little Prince” is amazing! The picture and words of heroes show how author could perfectly connect amazing story of Saint-Exupery and tough story of Haruki and Sakura. Grace!
Moral of the anime
The next anime I watched after “I want to eat your pancreas” was “Your lie in April” and this sequence helped to feel the main idea much better. I can describe this idea by lyrics of Thirty Seconds To Mars’ song called “City of angels” – “One life, one love, live!”. This idea became mainstream thing, but such bright people like Sakura and her tragic history disclose the idea as clearly as possible. Only after acquaintance with Sakura, Haruki started to value the life and her treasures: friends, family, nature, etc. Maybe after this story, people who doesn’t see the value of life will love it and live his own bright story.
Conclusion
“I want to eat your pancreas” is deep anime, I am happy I watched it together with “Your lie in April” and could feel these stories as maximally as possible.
> “All the choices I made were just so I could meet you”. (Sakura)
