Ash Lynx is seventeen, the youngest gang leader in lower Manhattan, and the long-running personal property of the mob boss Dino Golzine, who has kept him on a velvet leash since childhood. The series opens with a dying drifter pressing a vial into Ash's hand and whispering a single phrase: banana fish. Tracing the phrase upends the lives of everyone around him — a brother lost in Vietnam, a corrupt senator, a network of laboratories — and pulls in Eiji Okimura, a gentle Japanese photographer who walks into Ash's life and refuses to flinch at any of it.
