Great Pretender

Makoto Edamura works small cons in Tokyo's tourist alleys and considers himself a master of the craft until he tries to swindle a French oil-baron lookalike at Shibuya station who is actually the legendary con artist Laurent Thierry. Laurent takes Makoto on as a partner. The job they fly to Los Angeles on, the auction the partner job is folded inside, and the larger arc the series unfolds across — Singapore, London — are each their own pearl heist, each lighter than the last, and each turning, eventually, on what kind of person Makoto wants to be.
