Magic in Coco's world is supposed to be hereditary, born into the bloodline or not at all. Coco is not. She runs her widowed mother's seamstress shop in a hilltop village, sketches the magicians who pass through and accepts that she will not be one of them — until the day Qifrey, a travelling wizard, lets her see the trick to a spell that is not a trick. The trade her mother makes to keep Coco's accidental discovery quiet costs them more than expected, and Qifrey ends up taking Coco on as an apprentice at his small school for girls who actually wanted to attend.
