SPOILER WARNING. THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS IN IT. IF YOU DO NOT WANT SPOILERS SKIP TO THE SUMMARY AT THE END OF THE REVIEW.
Mushoku Tensei is an isekai that I partially knew what to expect when going into it. I knew it wasn't like any other isekai. It turns out that yeah, it's really not, but at the same time, it is.
PLOT/STORYLINE
The plot of Mushoku Tensei starts off semi-generic. We have this really shitty bum of a protagonist that is obviously an Otaku. The difference is this dude is a complete piece of low-tier shit and is shown to skip out on a funeral in order to jerk it. (I'll go more in-depth on characters later) He saves some teenagers from being hit by a truck and is given the chance to reincarnate as the gods saw his final good deed. Unfortunately with him being a pervert, he does some things growing up that are really disgusting and make it so that I could never really properly recommend someone this show. As we follow him growing up we see him change from a shit person to a semi shit person. I really like this and it's why the show is one of my favorites now, (SPOILER TAG AS THESE ARE LATER IN THE EPISODES PLOT AROUND EPISODE 7-11)
With this, I have to give the Storyline a 9/10
Character Development
As I mentioned before Rudeus has grown a lot in the anime. He went from a total piece of shit to semi-tolerable human beings. Those around him affected him and caused his growth over time. This growth then affected those around him as well giving them growth. For example, Eris's mother someone who seemed like a really shitty person became a really likable character in the span of 3 minutes. She didn't like Rudeus because she had her sons taken from her and now all of a sudden this strange boy from a rival family is living in her home instead of her own kids. She then sees how lonely Rudeus is without his family and offers to adopt him and even give him Eris as a bride. While this was then followed with a comedic moment it really showed us a lot about her in such a short time.
Character development gets a 8.5/10
Power Scaling and Magic System
The magic system and power scaling in Mushoku Tensei are extremely present. Unlike in other Isekai, we don't have a main character with any special abilities. He first finds out he can cast spells without chanting their incantations but later he is able to teach Sylphiette how to do this and it's not special to just him. As we see when he and Eris get kidnapped. Power means a lot. Ghislaine someone who has dedicated her life to being the best sword user in the world has proven to us that hard work pays off in this world. If Rudeus and Eris don't dedicate time to their training they WILL die. There are no overpowered gimmicks, no special spells exclusive to one person. It's all extremely well balanced out.
Due to this I give the Magic system and Power scaling a 10/10
Overall Art
Mushoku Tensei's art style is really good. The water looks like real water. It's beautiful. They put details into so many things that others wouldn't normally put details into. The action sequences are well-choreographed as well.
I can go on for ages about the art style right now however I would like to just score it and let you experience it for yourself.
I give the art a 9.5/10
Sound Design and Music
Mushoku Tensei has some beautiful music tracks. The sounds of water on its spells are wonderful and make it sound extremely real. I don't have a lot to say here other than this so I will leave it with a sound score of 9/10
Overall Summary
Mushoku Tensei is a wonderful show with many flaws in its characters at first that later start to be sorted out. It has a great art team and a great sound team. I look forward to where the series goes from here. It ended on a high note and I believe that high note will hold for quite some time. This show is a strong contender to become the top isekai of all time and I believe it might be able to hit that note. If you decide to watch this show, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Best of luck out there!
