Like S2, I'm giving this a decent score, mainly because I know at this point what I'm getting into with Konosuba, mindless antics for the most part. With that said, not a bad entry here all things considered.
I'll start with the stuff I always start off with, what's the plot here? The plot here now actually has more of a point of focus than S1 and S2's overarching plot of beating the Devil King. Here in Legend of Crimson, the focus is on the Crimson Demon Village which our group has been invited to by Yunyun and the village chief to help out the Crimson Demons with the threat of the Devil King's army attacking the village. I really do like this change in plot, to actually focus on something rather than have an entire 2 seasons be mostly about antics with some killing of Devil King generals in between. It's definitely a plus. I mentioned how S2 was starting to make Konosuba feel repetitive but this movie focusing on something different for a change was definitely a breath of fresh air. Broke up the monotony of the last 2 seasons for sure. I also mentioned that there were pacing issues with the last 2 seasons in my last review as well, I feel like this movie is paced pretty well actually. Some may say it's too fast but, to be honest with you, it feels just right to me. No issues here.
Now, characters... at this point, you know how I feel about Kazuma and nothing has really changed about how I feel about him, except for maybe trying to sacrifice himself to defeat Sylvia which was pretty noble of him and shows how much he's willing to put himself at risk for others. A really decent development that was desperately needed for his character. Aqua is Aqua, obnoxious and quite substantially more annoying than what she was in S2, almost S1 levels of annoying actually. Darkness hasn't really gotten much of a spotlight in this movie unfortunately, so my thoughts stay the same on her. But Megumin has now essentially solidified herself as my favourite character in all of Konosuba, this movie was essentially made for her to develop and development she definitely got in this movie. Another character they developed was her rival, Yunyun, because she really did need some development after how they treated her in S2. I feel like the strength this movie has with the character development is with the last 20 minutes of it and the idea of dependence and working together. You see the final attack's magic energy gathered by Wiz, while Kazuma distracts and becomes part of Sylvia and with the energy transferred from Wiz to both Megumin and Yunyun. Characters who are supposed to be "rivals" working together for the greater good and putting an end to evil. So overall, in the character department, some are like you'd expect from Konosuba. 2 characters which I don't like very much, a few I'm indifferent on (Darkness included), and a few that are great actually. Definitely an improvement from S1 and on par with S2.
In the visual department though, I'm sorry, but what's supposed to be different here? It genuinely doesn't look any different from the previous 2 seasons, which yes, it may be considered a good thing because the animators are staying safe and true to the previous material... However, I thought that with a movie, it was supposed to showcase high budget and good animation quality all throughout, this doesn't look like it's anything better than the anime series whatsoever. Sure, some effects may look fancier but all in all, in terms of movie quality, it's only really a B tier to me. The art style isn't bad by any means but all it really feels like to me is S2's animation quality just with the tiniest crumb of flair, I just expected more considering that this was supposed to be a movie.
Humour, if I'm being honest, it does actually try here and it got me a few times which surprised me. All in all though, I didn't find most jokes and antics funny once again but definitely the best attempt at humour so far.
I don't have much to say on the score other than it's the usual Konosuba score you are all probably familiar with now. Nothing special but neat in its own regard.
The ending to this movie was pretty wholesome actually, really shows how our group has developed from the beginning of the series. Even though it may be a little bit cliche, I still sort of enjoyed it.
So overall, this movie was actually pretty decent all things considered, I feel like a 6 is justified here because once again, it has all the problems I addressed in my previous Konosuba reviews but it was a really good attempt at subverting my expectations just like what S2 was. This 90-minute movie definitely had its enjoyment, some good character development, and overall, a solid plot to boot. I was almost going to consider this a 7 actually, but I REALLY just don't like how Kazuma goes back and forth from S1 Kazuma to S2 Kazuma at a flick of a switch. So to conclude, it's a really decent movie and if you're into Konosuba, it's worth the watch if you enjoy the series.
