I'm gonna tell you my biases before beginning my review. Demon slayer is one of the top three animes and that sort of means, I would love this movie no matter what. I love the shonen genre, but like to see a character's backstory more than just fight scenes. I also haven't read the manga so I don't know how well the movie portrayed the original source material. Okay, lets' get on with the review!
I saw this movie in theaters and seeing the animation style on a large screen was very eye-catching. I saw the movie with English subtitles and it was easy to follow along and understand. The voice-acting and animation of demon slayer has always been something I greatly enjoyed. The storyline and plot of the movie was good, not the greatest. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, but I could see people's distaste with the set-up of it. I've seen people describe it as 'the first few episodes of season two' and I agree with that. It didn't really feel like I was watching a movie, more like binging the first half of a season. Some people didn't enjoy this approach, but I liked it. I liked how it felt like you were getting to know the characters more and it was not all about the action. Also, I felt like the first half of the movie moved a bit slower than the second half. The pacing was a little all over the place. Another thing I enjoyed was the emotional scenes, many times I would find myself tearing up. Although some people who aren't really attached to the characters and/or merely watch the movie because of the fight scenes, I could see why you would be disappointed in the movie. The focus was more on the individual characters in the first half and the second half was full of action. (Now I'm gonna be talking more in depth and THERE ARE GOING TO BE MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!)
GO WATCH IT IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY!
