(I had to edit the rating cuz i accidentally put 50/100 like the dumbass i am, fixed it now sorry bout that lol)
I'm going to talk about both season 1 and season 2 part I, but I might as well explain the basic plot of Re:Zero. A boy, who goes by the name of Natsuki Subaru, is summoned to a new world, without any reason, he doesn't know why he is there, who summoned him, and where he is. He decides to go along his day and try to find out what this world is and figure out any clues to his summoning there. He then finds a girl named Emilia who is trying to get back something that was robbed from her. They go try to find the place where it was taken to then be killed. They both died. Or did they? They did, but at the same time, someone didn’t. Subaru figures out that he has an ability called “Returns By Death” which is going back in time to a “checkpoint” by dying. Subaru would use this knowledge to try and prevent himself and his friends from dying using his knowledge, the issue is that everytime he tries to say that he can go back in time by dying, he cannot bring himself to say it and leaves to consequences, so Subaru must use his ability to try and stop others and his own death while not giving away his ability, since he is the only one who knows what’s about to happen.
The concept of this is so interesting since almost everything he does is causing an alternate timeline, which leads to very interesting character moments. For example, we could see someone turn bad due to something that Natsuki did, and we can see that person be a good villain. But when Subaru dies, it essentially means that the person turned villain may not happen, unless Subaru is able to change his actions to prevent that, making the person stay good. This is such fantastic writing on the characters and it’s not just on side characters, it is also on Subaru himself. He keeps dying to try and prevent others deaths while keeping them on the good side, and when he fails, he keeps trying again until he is able to get things right for everyone, and this leads to him growing as a person trying to do things right.
He kept saying he couldn’t save anyone until he realizes that he can redo things and that giving up is very easy, and that makes him grow to become a better person and save many lives, and this is most notable in season 2. Even though he has to go through seeing his friends die over, and over, and over again, which can affect his mental health, he doesn’t give up, he keeps trying to become a better person to save everyone. The whole anime is about that and because of the characters, and the growth of Subaru throughout the anime (along with other characters) it is so enjoyable. Hell, my 2 favorite episodes do not have action sequences in it, it's just characters talking to motivate each other (these episodes are "From Zero" and "Parent and Child" again no spoilers but these are my favorites).
With that being said, I’m giving “Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World” a 9.5/10 definitely give it a shot.
