Summary
~~~Dorohedoro takes place in a bleak and dreary dystopian city known as "the Hole." There is another world besides hole for magic users only but is only accessible through a magic doorway created by magic users. Magic users often go to Hole to practice their magic on the humans that live there, sometimes leaving some with bug body parts, extra long necks, or even turning them inside out. The main character, Kaiman is a guy with a lizard head and has amnesia. He can't remember anything before waking up with his lizard head. He and his friend Nikaido are hunting down magic users that make their way to Hole to try to undo the spell. When he encounters magic users he chomps down on their heads to find out if they're the one who cursed him or not. The way he knows is because when he chomps down, a second man inside of him pokes his head out of his throat and says weather they are the right one or not. When he pulls their head out of his mouth he asks them what the guy inside said, usually killing them afterwards. But when En (pretty much the ruler of the magic world) learns about Kaiman killing a bunch of his men he sends a two of "cleaners" into Hole basically starting a war between Kaiman, Nikaido, and the magic users.
(Spoilers from here on)Story
The story is very unique and is something very out of the box and I'd never of heard anything like it before. It was very exciting and I didn't find it to be predictable at all, so many crazy things are happening all at once.Spoiler, click to view
Like when Kaiman became a magic user at the end, that was super cool. It has good world building as well, there were multiple chapters are a time where Kaiman wasn't even present Spoiler, click to view
Wether it be Kaiman, Kai, Aikawa or whatever and it just focused on the magic users or the cross eyes, showing us how they were perceiving things. I actually like En's group of magic users better than the main group of Kaiman and everyone. The pacing of the manga is pretty good, it could possibly have been a little shorter but I think its fine. I also feel like the change in what the main goal of the story is was done at a pretty good time. Spoiler, click to view
When En killed Kaiman and his face went back to normal the story started to switch up. Slowly at first while they figure out what they each need to do next before the goal of killing the crosseyes boss gets set. I was also kept entertained and wanting to know what happens next.
# Characters
All the characters are great, and thats saying something because there is a very large cast of characters. They are all enjoyable to see whenever they are in the story, wether its playing baseball, fighting, or cracking jokes. Kaiman and Nikaido got especially cool in the second half with their power ups and
kaimans extra heads reveal. The group of magic users are very dynamic and have my favorite char eaters in it. Fujita actually ends up doing things and its really nice to see. Overall the cast of characters is great and they are all very different both personality wise as well ass their abilities. My personal favorite character is Ebisu, not only is she funny but her magic is really cool. She develops (and undoes the development) in weird ways and its very enjoyable.
Art
The art style is really good and conveys the feeling of the world extremely well. Its dark and works very well with the series.
Overall while I wouldn't say its a masterpiece, it is definitely very good and accomplishes exactly what it sets out to.
(My first review so sorry if its not that good, and thank you for reading this far.)
