Another is the story of this little twink kid; he is not very memorable tbh. Like many pip-squeak male protagonists in high school drama, he only exists to narrate the stories of his classmates, which is exactly what we have going on here.
I got recommended this based on the fact that it was spooky, which it is. I don't usually physically cringe during movies and TV that depict death except for a few exceptions that tend to be extremely graphic. For instance, the I Spit On Your Grave films, or any other exploitation / r@pe and revenge horror films tend to be extremely fucking brutal, especially those from the 70s. Another's death, and gore scenes are on the same level. I have seen some compare the death to that in the Final Destination films, which I have seen a couple of, and although those films are graphic, the cringe, gross-out, the gives-you-shivers effect is way more prominent in Another than it ever was in FD.
The art style was a touch dated... like I have seen much older anime that looked much better drawn, especially in the horror genre. That being said, though, the animation for the blood and guts was satisfactory, lol, and those are the star of this show anyway. The character designs are a little ordinary, but they ironically come to life once you see them impaled, cutthroat, hanged and crucified. Literally, no transgression left unexplored when it comes to ways to murder school children.
As a horror fan, I thought Another was solid; I liked the ghost-story elements. I liked that I couldn't guess the ending, although I feel as though it was a little lazy and didn't really make sense, which is a shame because all other plot holes about the strange occurrences in the school get tied up well in a way that doesn't spoon-feed the audience the information, its trusts we can put the clues together and doubts us in the right places. Unfortunately, this isn't executed as well with the ending, but at least I didn't see it coming.
Missaki was a great character, and I love how she was very much so intended to be the prime suspect for all the weird shit that happens; I mean, her look even fooled me...can't be too careful of anime characters with eye patches; there is often something sus going on. But, she was cute and weird, and without spoiling anything, she surprised me.
Another was alright; if you like gore and horror and high school and creepy girls, it's fun. It isn't super deep, you don't need to watch like ten video essays explaining the nuances of the show to understand what it's going for, it is basically just a fun little experiment that plays with elements of curses, ghost stories, witchcraft. et cetra. If that still doesn't; tickle your fancy, you got to at least see some of these death scenes lmao, one bitch is killed by an umbrella!
