Nadia.
Oh my god Nadia.
What the fuck happened to my Nadia.
This is it. This is the worst anime in general I have ever seen. This is far below even my reaction to Dragon Ball GT as a child. This goes beyond how I felt about Naruto when I went through my edgy 14 year old phase. Even beyond my lukewarm at best reaction to the Hunter x Hunter Greed Island Final OVA series. Because, while I thought all of those were bad, none of them were just an IP abused by a completely different outside group. GT at least had Toei. GI Final at least had Nippon Animation.
Nadia: The Motion Picture isn't Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water. It is Nadia: We Want Your Money. It apes brand recognition and familiar characters for a quick buck, it does nothing to expand on these characters, it does nothing to develop them further, and a lot of the most memorable characters don't even return. It shoehorns in another love triangle subplot, despite the love triangle in the show being the worst part about it. It has this completely forgettable villain who makes weird clone things, and it's excused as, "Oh, he knew the bad guys in the main series, don't worry, this makes sense." BITCH THIS ISN'T A FUCKING DRAGON BALL Z MOVIE, THIS IS HIDEAKI ANNO'S MASTERPIECE (1 of 4).
The worst part about this movie isn't any of that though. It's not how ugly it looks, it's not how bad the animation is (if you can even call it that most of the time), it's not how poor its grasp of the characters is, it's not how stereotypical the "Okay woman" subplot regarding Nadia is, the worst part, the definite WORST THING about this atrocity of a film, is that I am forced to say "Yeah, Nadia's great, BUT". I have to add more to that idea, that idea that Nadia is great. I have to prolong my thought with this fucking piece of garbage, and that makes me angry. It makes me want to never fucking watch another Nadia anime ever again. The anime I gave a 10/10 to. It's almost fitting that a surprising hit for me would have a surprisingly bad cashgrab waiting in the shadows.
I will say, without fail, do not watch this movie. There's nothing to be gained here, watching it adds nothing to the show, it adds nothing to your understanding of it, it adds nothing to Anno's career, it adds nothing to Gainax as an entity beyond a footnote, it doesn't even really exist. It's not on the BD, it's been relegated to the same purgatory the Nadia Specials in, one of "Sure you exist buddy". A purgatory of "Oh yeah, that happened, moving on" is honestly what this film deserves.
Yeah, Nadia's great, but avoid this fucking movie.
