"There is no such thing as a letter that does not deserve to be delivered"
Whether in the bustling streets of the city, or the middle of a raging battlefield. Whether the sentences are so long that the words fly off the page, or so short they can be said in a few seconds. Whether the receiver is off in a faraway land, or is even farther into the heavens. No matter what, every letter deserves to be delivered.
"Become someone that matches with their name"
The universe of Violet Evergarden is not that far off from our own. In a world with the economy booming after the finale of a long war taking place, people both celebrate the new opportunities, but also mourn over what is now lost. The multiple striking characters every episode chooses to focus on exhibit such likeness and raw emotion to the average faces we ourselves meet every day. Through their stories, they create their own extravagant tales of misery, sorrow, and hope. These feelings so strongly conveyed through the show's excellent form of storytelling, visuals, and OST, place us into the shoes of our own innocent protagonist, as we re-encounter these feelings through an entirely new perspective. Not only did Violet Evergarden perform its duty in being a wholly entertaining form of media, but it reawakened my eyes to so much I thought I knew, leaving an unforgettable place in my heart through each and every tale told. In our own worlds, when communication and truly understanding how every one of us feels has become increasingly more difficult, its simplification of just how important our words are, no matter the size or to whom they are delivered, is so incredibly effective on a life-changing level.
"Writing letters with the very hand that took the lives of so many"
So far, I've barely even touched the protagonist and her own journey itself. I don't mean to put it to shame though, as it holds just as much quality and entertainment as everything revolving it does. Violet's circumstance, while difficult to directly relate to, breaks down the core message of what it means to be human, just as every other side character also accomplishes. Understanding her tragic backstory and the character development's unfolding in front of your eyes is something both magical and heart wrenching. No episode in this show feels wasted, as everyone Violet meets and everything she experiences plays such a vital part in her growth and ability to understand what "I love you" truly means, and how to live without someone that meant so dear to you. Violet never stops becoming an intriguing character, and her development from start to finish is so incredibly satisfying to experience (Yui Ishikawa's performance isn't to be glanced over either, as its easily one of my favorites in any anime ever; I can't imagine anyone fitting the role as incredibly as she does). Despite the pain she brought to so many in her unfortunate past, she now brings an even stronger light to those in her future despite all odds, and lives past the boundaries of "missions" and "orders" to completely redefine the importance Gilbert holds in her heart. A seemingly impossible feat, but one accomplished with much effort so expertly portrayed.
"Violet... be free"
No matter who you are, Violet Evergarden is bound to bring you something to take away from it. Whether it's the compelling character drama or individual character arcs, or simply the gorgeous visuals KyoAni has conjured up, there's so much to simply adore from this series. Violet's message to live on despite the shackles that might hold us down is one I hope everyone who watches this masterpiece takes to heart, that her story lives on through the ages, and even more grow even stronger towards their feelings and the ones they love the most.
