I Want to Eat your Pancreas is a masterpiece. I saw this after seeing Shingeki no Kyojin and I went into this movie with a "Ehh" attitude. Even, though I wasn't fair to the anime, it blew my mind by how good it was. So good that I watched it twice, in back-to-back days. It isn't about anything special, it's extremely grounded to reality. Then how come it's so good? I'll try my best to explain.
Spoiler Alert for the anime.
Cons :
- Spoiler at the Start
There are two spoilers at the start. Sakura's Death and the last message. The con for me is the latter. I don't hate it nor dislike it but, I feel it would have been better without telling us that info at the start. Cause at the (Nearly) start they have a conversation about "I want to eat your Pancreas" anyway.
Pros :
- Spoiler at the Start
The other spoiler at the start (Sakura's Death) is honestly brilliant, cause we know she's going to die like the main character and we can choose to actually like, follow or get attached to the characters.
- Foreshadowing
The foreshadowing of the murderers are amazing. It isn't that big of a deal and is not spoken about a lot but, at the same time it isn't completely absent.
- Twist
We already know she's going to die and there isn't much room for a twist, right? Wrong. Boom she doesn't even die cause of the disease but, is murdered. Really liked that. Cause at that time we probably knew she's dead but, this reason I personally didn't expect.
- Simple Story
The story is really simple and so grounded. It's usually difficult to make movies like this after all the different types of anime we've seen and so, many of them fail. But, not this one. It's so simple yet, Captivating.
- Characters
All the characters are likable. Even Sakura's friend, you get to understand her side of the story as well. Her best friend didn't tell her she's dying but, a person she recently started talking to. I feel her. The balance between the 2 main characters are brilliant. Sakura is a extrovert who laughs away her pain and is the loud character while, Haruki is the usual introvert. This role is played so much in anime, however it still stands out to us as an audience. I love how towards the end Haruki is changed by Sakura and slowly comes out of his shell. And by the end of the movie he seems really comfortable with Sakura's best friend, too meaning he opened up.
- Pace
When it comes to story telling the most important thing is pace. You can't give the audience too much of infomation to handle in one scene or give to little cause they'll either get lost or bored. I want to eat your pancreas goes at a slow pace but, does not feel that way at all. It's really breezy.
- Animation
The animation is above amazing. The visuals are simply stunning. I seriously saw a couple of haters saying the animation is horrible which is weird cause it's not. The end seen where Haruki and Sakura have a conversation is animation-driven and the visuals are vibrant.
