THIS IS A SPOILER FREE REVIEW.
At some point in your life, you'll start asking yourself what have you been living for. What do your want to obtain or what are you doing with your life. Truth is, almost nobody would have an answer ready for those questions.
This manga is about Inoue Meiko,a 20yo girl with a frustrating job she hates and a plain life with her boyfriend. One day she decides to quit her job and try to do something satisfying with her life. This choice impacts her boyfriend to,and so they both dive into a new reality of uncertainity and possibilities. Problem is,both her and her boyfriend have no money. Their last restort is his collage band. If they manage to debut, everything would be resolved. And thus our story starts, but let's begin with the actual review.
The narrative is exceptional,it combines humor and emotional moments in an apt way and the dialogue is realistic. The art is outstanding,as expected of Asano. His usage of both digital pictures and hand-drawn panels is something I truly find beautiful.
The cast is absolutely perfect. You feel like you've known this characters for all your life. Like they were your friends. Solanin is about normal people, they aren't tragic characters or some kind of heroes. And they are at an essential stage of their lives, their early 20s.
As Asano said, the most important messages in our lives don't come from celebrities or heroes. They come from the average people all around us,that are just feet from where we stand. And it conveys this message so damn well. The feeling of not being cut out for the world,of having no purpose or no ambition is something that everybody has experienced. And this manga shows us how just a ray of hope can change our lives.
How even in the darkest times,we have to go on living, cherishing the little moments of joy. Because this is what Solanin is about. Hope. Our hope. We are able to create our own future. Happiness is something that we can actually achieve. Growing up and becoming adult is not easy. Life is not easy. Yet at the same time everything is possible. This is something you can relate to on a truly personal level, and at least for me it was a life-changing read. If you are feeling lost, need to find some inspiration or you just want to experience something truly real and close to you,Solanin will reach you right to the core.
This is my first time properly reviewing something so I probably didn't convey well what I had in mind. Anyway, thank's for reading and I hope ya'll check out this little underrated piece of art. (After reading, listen to the song Solanin by Asian kung-fu generation or by Rotti on youtube)
