Note before the start: This obviously has some spoilers. Intro
I saw that a lot of the people dont like scums wish... thinking that it is only a chaotic love triangle resolving around nudity. I guess i dont blame anyone for thinking that... but you know, as people say, dont judge a book by its cover. I believe that this anime is very similar to Higehiro in some sense, what i mean by that is if you look deep enough and really focus on what is the story trying to show you... i think you can find out that nudity is not the main focus, sure we can't deny the fact that it's a big part of the anime - but what lot of people missed here is that the nudity and all the s*x scenes tried to show viewers the emotions characters like Mugi, Hanabi or Akane had bottled up... there was this struggle on the inside of them which was not just told but also shown via s*x, i just personally feel that it's really impressive, having balls to show it like this.., i feel like it really hit the mark.. at least for me that is(h*rny teen? xd). Scums wish revolves around Hanabi, a high school girl interested in one of her older friends Narumi, and later he also becomes her new homeroom teacher... this isn't everything... as Narumi is interested in Akane Minagawa - the music teacher, we don't really end here.. as there is one more main character.. that being Mugi Awaya.. a high school guy, who has an interest in music teacher. This creates the main issue which the anime is focusing on, Hanabi and Mugi having an interest in their teachers. That is enough for an introduction, i would say... so let's check out the characters where i will try to give you even more details.
Hanabi Yasuraoka
So, like I said at the start.. Hanabi Yasuraoka is the main character of the anime. She has an interest in Narumi; this not only puts her in a tough position for her, it also puts her in a dilemma where she asks herself what she should do... she feels like she doesn't have a chance and that its next to impossible to be with Narumi. This pushes her to Mugi... a guy with basically a similar if not the same issue; this is where the nudity comes into play in the anime and where a lot of people started to hate it. But what i believe is that the scenes just showed how desperate both characters are.. and how they are trying to keep them busy with some sort of pleasure.. using their imagination - this though doesn't work for long as it not only is just a temporary fix which i would say doesn't really help, but it also creates a long term pain and discomfort - to top it off Akane plays with Narumi and uses his interest in her favor to hurt Hanabi and also Mugi. What would be the conclusion of Hanabis character... she had like all the options you know... i didn't mention this yet but there was also a supporting character Sanae which had interest for her... so not only she was trying to comfort herself and forget using Mugi... she also had Sanae, she was interested in her... so Hanabi knew how Sanae has to feel - thus she felt bad about rejecting her. But all these experiences... rejecting Sanae, confessing to Narumi and getting closure... even with Akane at the end, i believe this is something you don't really forget.. and the way Hanabi walked out of the situation and closed it as a chapter.. just taking the lessons from it for future... i just really liked it personally.
Mugi Awaya
As for Mugi Awaya.. as i said before, he was in a very similar spot as Hanabi, having interest in a music teacher despite knowing that she will only play with him how she wants. He at first tried to "change" her for the better.. as he believed she just needed someone like that. He wanted to be the one who would change her, later in the anime, though it seemed like he and Hanabi made some sort of a promise to help each other and stop just being replacements for the ones they actually are interested in. With that said, Mugi didn't keep the promise... as he for a second saw a change in her attitude, later, he found out that this wasn't mainly his work, but Narumis... so he was at the end forced to move on... even if he didn't want to. Conclusion for Mugi is that he also learned the hard way... broke the promise with Hanabi, which i believe he then regretted; and he also came to conclusion that he liked the old and more toxic Akane than the one more caring.
Akane Minagawa
Akane Minagawa, i would say was for most of the part the villain of the plot. She was playing with the hearts of others. When she had an opening and saw someone being interested in her... she just enjoyed having them do what she wants and trying to comfort her.. with that said, though this didn't really fulfill her long term... maybe not even short term, she just seemed to hate everything and this was a way to get the negative energy out; unfortunately she was taking it out on Mugi and Hanabi which hit them badly. For her, the saving point was Narumi Kanai... I still am impressed by him to break through and handle all of her negative energy she was putting on... however, at the end we could see that he was something Akane was looking and hoping for to have for a long, long time. To conclude it, I guess we can say it's nice that she tried to fix the relationship she had with Hanabi and also Mugi, giving them both closure to the situation.
Sanae Ebato
Sane Ebato didn't have it easy as a character beacause of her interest in Hanabi. She knew all too well Hanabis love interest and she also knew about her relationship with Mugi more or less. This is maybe where we could guess she would back away. It didn't happen; she, instead of that, still tried to pursue her. This not only created some painful times for her, but also Hanabi. Thats one of the reasons why I believe she then disappeared for some time. She realized that what she was doing wasnt getting her anywhere, so she decided to give each other some space and think. At the end of the day she came to the conclusion that she should move on, since Hanabi still tried to hold onto Narumi. One big plus here, I think, is that the two of them have remained friends.
Narumi Kanai
Narumi Kanai, i already said why and how he had an impact on Akane... so I'm going to just tell one more thing i liked about him, at the end where Hanabi confessed to him.. i really liked how he didn't push her away unpleasantly or anything like that. He thanked her for understanding his interest in Akane and set the viewpoint on how the relationship between him and Hanabi is. It surely wasn't nice for Hanabi.. but i appreciated this closure way more than, for example, the one Mugi and Hanabi had.
Noriko Kamomebata
I actually didn't touch on Noriko at all here so far.. so only few words for her as a supporting character. She was younger than the other characters... she had an interest for Mugi, this is actually something i didn't say about Mugi, he at first went out with Noriko... but thankfully didn't go to any intimate space with her and just rejected her clearly. What I also want to point out here is about Norikos character. She acted and behaved like a princess; she built some specific image of perfection in her head she tried to reach and pursue. The painful thing for her was when she realized that her dream may be unreal to reach and that maybe that isn't what she actually wants, so following her in the process of saying goodbye to the image she tried to hold and be was indeed interesting. I feel like despite Noriko being the youngest.. She was actually the one who held her head high the most at the end; since she not only overcame herself, but also loved her new identity, she started to build.
Takeaways
I usually like to do these but this time i just feel so confident that if you read each character... I think there it basically said in the best way i could (at the moment i was writing it :D)
Conclusion
Dont underestimate this anime. I think it has lot of things to give despite it being messed up in a sense of having nudity.
