Intro
Tokyo Revengers, when I first found out about this anime, I didn't have a single clue to - what would possibly happen or what should happen; and what should I expect, oh boy was it worth it. The way the anime portrayed and revealed not only the plot but also the characters were for me really amazing and fun to watch, i saw few people writing reviews where they said that the plot is predictable, i don't know if they watched similar animes to this... but for me personally it was just really fun and unpredictable. I never really knew when the next character would be shown or with what decision would the main character end up.
Something I also have to mention and appreciate is how the music was on point with the action which was going on in the moment, it really hyped you up at the end of the episode, making you crave next week just to see how it goes there or just overall making the fight scenes more satisfying.
Takemichi Hanagaki
Takemichi Hanagaki is the main character in the whole Tokyo Revengers series. He was a very insecure and weak guy, which basically gave up on everything, just living a, we could say, shut in life. A huge mess living without any meaning. This changed when he suddenly reverted back in time and found out about his ability; it was a second chance he got. I honestly was surprised with which route he decided to take - before Takemichi was able to stabilize and make up his mind in the past, he got into a place where he was involved in gang stuff. This led him to Tokyo Manji Gang or Toman, where Mikey and Draken and other important characters for the anime were. Another thing to say which was interesting here is how basically 50, if not 80, if not 90% of his motivation to improve himself was Hinata. I'm in a place where I'm thinking - was this cool or cringe... I can't decide right now, let's say both. I cannot deny one thing... and that is that as the anime went longer and longer.. Takemichi started to care for other characters like Mikey and Draken aswell. Despite him being a crybaby as other characters like to call him, he still was always able to somehow make everything work... he wasn't strong physically... it just always felt that he was a mental support and booster for other characters... if i think about it right now, this is i guess something that could also piss me off... the fact that Takemichi always had to rely on someone else... don't get me wrong it's nice and good to have friends to rely on... but sometimes it really was so painful to watch and say... oh is he really going to rely and let others change fate? That's the first side of the coin.. second one would be, i guess, that he knew his limits and always tried to do what he thought was best.. we cant lie that there wasnt really any other mental booster which would be as effective as Takemichi.
Mikey
Mikey would be the second most interesting character for me atleast, thats why we are going to check him now. He is the leader of Tokyo Manji Gang, Manjiro Sanos personality was i think twisted, he was a great leader who always helps his friends and members when in need or to get revenge, however he also had a very dark side of him where he would find himself being violent towards anyone, sometimes even his friends... this led to lot of situations where our main crybaby hero, im talking about Takemichi, he had to step in, in order to help Mikey stabilize and not let him fall into a darkness where some other people like Kisaki Tetta fill the void with long term evil plans. This leads me to realizing that Mikey had a lot of burden on himself, thats why he craved more power for his gang in order to feel more safe. Mikeys character itself is a big tragic fight with himself, constantly fighting the fear and evil... not knowing always who to trust or how to lead the whole Toman Gang, he was forced to mature really quickly in the anime... did it always work out well... well if you saw the anime you know that the answer is no. To conclude this rant about Manjiro Sano or Mikey. He and his friends putted a lot of burden and responsibility by making him the leader of Toman. If we consider his age and the stuff he needs to take care of... i cant help but be impressed.
Draken
Now Draken is someone who I think really helped Mikey grow. He himself as a character is very interesting, but I wanted to start off by saying that he was someone who was a key part of what made Mikey whom he was. His amazing support, loyalty and trust he showed really helped Mikey take on the burden of being a leader at the age they were at. Now finally onto Draken himself. He, as I said, was very loyal and reliable to those who were his friends or part of the Toman. With that said, he never really open-minded as maybe some other characters... he had an idea in his mind for what is and isn't right; it was hard to convince him - we could see this multiple times when Takemichi knew something from the future, but he never really convinced him 100%. Now the other side of the coin here was that the things which he believed were right - he always gave them his all, even if it had to cost his life... he never gave up on anyone.
Hinata Tachibana
Hinata Tachibana - probably one of the main motivations for Takemitchi to change, she as a character i feel like didn't have much screentime as i think she could. So from the little time we got to see her i really appreciated her enthusiasm for some things, lot of the times it was just the short comedy part of the show, or sometimes it could also be a bit deeper talk Takemitchi and Hinata had together, she really seemed like a keeper if you ask me, she listened to Takemitchi and if she could.. She tried to help him. Of course, we didn't see her involved too much with some bigger events like Bloody Halloween. With that said, i would like to conclude her character as someone who has an unleashed potential - maybe this potential can be seen in manga.. but well, if we judge just the anime, i feel like she could get more spotlight and be even better than she already was.
Keisuke Baji
Keisuke Baji or the one who sacrificed himself maybe even for nothing or to try and open Mikey's eyes - we are going to touch on this bit later. Baji was one of the founding members of Toman; As a character, I felt like he had a lot of similarities with Draken. He was also very distant and cold... it wasn't very easy to change his mind.. and he didn't trust anyone easily.. neither really showed emotion - so atleast to me as a viewer i felt like i couldnt get a clear enough read on him. Baji has to be one of the most interesting characters in the whole anime... i really loved his dedication towards Toman - he was even willing to go to valhalla as a spy, while even whole Toman thought he really was against them; he put himself at risk as a first contact like this and sadly paid the price.. this is maybe also something i didn't like as much.. He didn't rely on anyone and tried to do things on his own; he surely protected others by taking the risk and burden on his own... but in the end it just left a pain in the hearts of others like Chifuyu. In conclusion - it was maybe sad how Baji ended at the end of the anime, but i feel like that was the reason why he was at his peak as a character. Baji will for sure be remembered for how and why he died.
Chifuyu Matsuno
Chifuyu Matsuno or how i liked to call him the right hand of Baji and later of Takemitchi, i really liked his personality which was less cold and more soft than someone like Draken and Baji - this didn't mean he couldn't fight and stand up for himself, let's say he was similar to Takemitchi but he wasn't crying all of the time. His dedication to keeping friends united and always being there for Baji was impressive to say the least... what I also believe we have to appreciate is his past and background with Toman in general. The guidance and advice he gave to takemitchi before taking any action was also something to appreciate, Chifuyu was able to fight and stand his ground till his last breath every time - on the other hand he sometimes didn't calculate things well or let his emotions sway him completely - view this as a two sided coin - these traits of his could be the difference maker in winning a fight or ultimately having it as the downfall and tragedy for everyone.
Kazutora Hanemiya
Kazutora Hanemiya - probably one of the guys which turned the whole Toman family around, because of his past incident which included Mikeys older brother - he really felt bad for it... but if we add up the unstable mind of his with the tragedy that happened in the past... it probably wasn't so surprising that he threw it at someone else. As we could see at the end of the anime, he was forgiven by Mikey and he started his recovery to becoming a more stable and calm individual than he was in the past.
Kisaki Tetta
Kisaki Tetta, this may be the most interesting character - i don't know if he is more interesting than Takemitchi, probably yes, since he is the mastermind behind all of the events. It seems like he is just playing with each gang and people like with some figures. From the anime we don't know much details about him, but what i really liked about him is the secretive and unpredictable nature/vibe he gives off, at least to me.
Shuuji Hanma
Shuuji Hanma, this may be a surprise to a lot of people, but I also really liked this character, i feel like he has a lot of uncovered potential that may lie in manga. I generally like the appearance, the tattoo he had... and the time he was in Valhalla seemed to really suit him... i wouldn't mind seeing him as one of the main and most powerful villains. I really liked how he always got himself pumped with excitement and adrenalin - and then used it to pump his gang up. Now if i think twice about his excitement and the consequences his actions had - i think it's safe to say that he really was living for the excitement without really caring about consequences or his own life at times.
Emma Sano
Emma Sano, now for her only few words... i think she worked well as the supporting character - creating either funny or really nice moments for other characters like Hinata, Takemitchi or Draken, specifically speaking when Emma was doing weird stuff with Takemitchi - leading to Hinata misunderstanding but also not really the whole situation. Or when Draken bought her a plushie she really wanted for a long time, that was really nice to see - the good and caring side of Draken. Other than that i dont think Emma did much, if we get season 2 maybe she will.
Naoto Tachibana
Now of course we cant miss Naoto Tachibana - he surely served as a supporting character, i don't have much to say here... only two things i would like to say are that he was the core and important part to Takemitchi since he connected him to the present and past while also always pushing forward Takemitchi when he was feeling hopeless.
Takeaway
Main takeaway here - phewwwww, surely not one only. I think friendship and sticking together has to be one of them - for example Keisuke Bajis dedication and loyalty for Toman was impressive - sure he left Toman for some time but the main goal was to take down Kisaki and eventually reunite happily with everyone in Toman, we could say the same about few other characters here like Chifuyu or Takemitchi. What Takemitchi showed us, though, is that you should never give up and always try to find any possible way to make things work; his dedication to that was amazing... starting as a sore loser to almost instantly taking on a burden that he is probably the only one who can really change the past and the present. Mikey showed us how carrying a big burden of a whole gang and friends can be impressive but also at the end of the day really draining - it didn't end well multiple times in the anime because of this - so here i would sum it up as, test yourself and try to carry tougher things to make yourself stronger... but also carry a weight you know is your limit and will eventually destroy you.
Conclusion
To conclude this anime, if you enjoy fighting scenes along with a few comedy and romance moments, this is a go-to, the plot is pretty good, but what really shined for me here was the depth of characters - it always felt that there is an uncovered potential for every single character.
Thanks for reading(thanks twice if you read the whole thing), took some time ngl :DDDD.
