Hello!
Finally, I'm writing this review for one of my favourite Anime's. The first season of this show was very good and strong, but doesn't compare to this season in my books. Yes i ended up crying, but we will get to that in time. SPOILERS AHEAD DUH!
Season 1 introduced almost all of the necessary characters that were needed, so this season could easily develop and expand on them all. Picking straight up after Season 1, Karasuma and Irina are instantly the main focus, trying to develop their relationship.
Throughout this Season there are many revelations, twists and surprising moments which make this Season all the more impressive. Almost straight away, Itona comes back into the Mix and finally remains as a character, i quite liked Itona as well so this was a great placement, plus we got another great fight between two Tentacle Monsters which is always entertaining and spices things up compared to Class E's assassination attempts. We also get a much better rivalry between E Class and the Main School, with fights outside of Exams, all of which are incredibly entertaining, showing Asano off in more light and his rivalry with Karma.
Then The Reaper Arc happens, an arc that is incredibly good as it is the first instance of Season 2 where the show takes a serious turn, with both the Kids and Koro-Sensei being in danger, this entire Arc is filled with wits, fight scenes, twists and generally good moments. Probably one of the strongest Arcs in the show. Throughout all of these Arcs there are smaller light-hearted ones which seem insignificant other than for a lovable few episodes with characters, but even these end up with relevancy to the plot and characters developments.
Halfway through the Season we get an incredibly shocking reveal from Kayano, which completely caught me off guard but was great as it kept the story strong and showed that there is always someone planning something. This entire Arc develops Kayano and also makes for a lovely moment between her and Nagisa as well as finally we learn the truth of Koro-Sensei.
His story is very good and all made sense in the plot of the show and brings about the final turning point of the show. His entire backstory is filled with questionable actions but makes him all the more lovable as it brings a realisation of who he actually is.
Then we go to space, like what... To be honest it's not even that bad, its actually quite an enjoyable episode or two but I can't lie that it is weird. Then there is the final few episodes, where the government steps in and it all goes from happy to dark.
We have an insane monster fight between Koro-Sensei and The Fake Reaper, now turned into a monster. Their fight is absolutely insane, filled with devastating blows and a general fear Koro-Sensei may lose. Not only that but Kayano straight up gets killed, a moment i didn't expect from such a show but it completely broke my hear. This leads to Koro-Sensei finally unlocking some true power and defeating The Reaper. Thankfully, Kayano is saved as well, but Koro-Sensei is at his wits end and we go to the Finale. By the way, everything leading up to this was great, infiltrating the governments shield was all a great show of the kids skills.
The finale is where i finally broke. Koro-Sensei is accepting of his death and all the students gather one final time to say goodbye to this beloved teacher, the person who cared the most about each of them. Hell I'm getting a bit watery eyed writing this. It's an episode of pure emotion and sadness, there is like 10 minutes of Koro Sensei taking a roll call, something that seems stupid but at the moment is heartbreaking as it's the final time he will directly talk to each of them and every character shows the pain in their answers.
Finally, it's time to kill him and Nagisa, is the only one to step forward, and honestly the only one who could do it. Even Karma, promising to kill Koro-Sensei didn't object, likely as even he didn't have the heart to kill him. All of this continues to build up sadness inside me and just as you think the final blow will happen, Koro-Sensei stops Nagisa, telling him to Smile which is just a gut wrenching blow. And finally, with one final "Sayano Koro-Sensei" Nagisa assassinates him, and a brilliant light show begins. This was it, a scene that fully broke me as we watch as all the characters break-down, seeing even Karma, the hot headed, unbreakable character shed a tear really broke me, if even he cried then how could i not. Each character is completely broken and so was I, this scene set in stone how great this Anime was. If Characters who were all fun and had very few serious moments could create such an emotional moment then this Anime was genius.
After that, we see how everyone moves on with life, another episode which actually resonated with me as I recently left school and seeing these characters all separate slowly was kinda heartbreaking, the same way that inevitably after School, even those closest to you might drift away. It was sad to see happen to this class too, one that felt so closely bonded. And while they do meet up, it isn't a full reunion which makes it slightly bittersweet.
Season 2 of Assassination classroom is filled with great action, comedic moments, genius strategies and plans, heartbreaking moments, betrayals, twists and almost everything you could compile into an anime and it is all done perfectly, nothing feels out of place. Every scene is great and all the characters are amazing and enjoyable, especially when interacting amongst one another. As with the last season, the animation style was the perfect fit for the tone of the show and it had some truly beautiful scenes.
All the openings were also absolute bangers
So yea, this Anime will always be in the top area of my list, so many different themes come into play and I love every one of them, action, comedy, sadness. For a show to have me hyped up for a fight, laughing out loud and then bawling my eyes out shows how adaptable and well-written this show is. Each character has an influence and develops well over the course of the episodes. I also really enjoyed all the episodes with Asano and the Principal, they were great antagonists, putting both Koro-Sensei and the kids into tricky situations which led to more genius plans and great rivalry moments. Just another showing of how great all the characters are in this show.
All the backstories revealed in this Season are great too, finally we learn why certain characters are the way they are and it just fully completes the story. Pretty much everything is accounted for but also leaves open the future, and while we never see Nagisa and Kayano together, to me they definitely end up together. All the relationships in the show are amazing.
So there you have it, I've said before that my reviewing style alters for some reason, sometimes I summarise the entirety of a show and explain arcs and thins, other times I just write down my general thoughts. I guess for newer anime's it is easier to put my thoughts straight down as i can remember most of the show compared to ones I watched a while ago. Hopefully this was an enjoyable read anyways.
Thank You for reading!
