The first time I heard about Blue Lock was when Hajime Isayama, author of Attack on Titan, recommended it to his readers on the promotion leaflet of his manga’s Volume 33. He said, “This is a manga that all Japanese should definitely read! And when you finally enjoy the end of my series “Attack on Titan”, hopefully you would check out Blue Lock.” As an AoT fan myself, I immediately got curious about the suggested manga. I mean, why would he mention it to the public if it’s not that good? When I looked for it, I was instantly drawn to the eye-catching manga covers and the captivating character designs. Not mentioning the intriguing plot because it’s not like any other sports manga or anime that I was able to read or watch before. After reading a few chapters, I felt that I didn’t want to stop due to several factors.
First: The characters are refreshing. Despite having minor similarities with the other series that I also read, I can still say that they are unique and each of them has their own story to tell which makes the manga more fascinating.
Second: The main point of the story is not to let the readers know about how important teamwork and friendship are when it comes to sports. Instead, it generally focuses on each striker’s ego which I think is extremely realistic. For the record, I am not an athlete. However, it’s a known fact to many that each player has that overwhelming driveforce within themselves to be on top - even wanting to beat or surpass their own selves. It’s undoubtedly engrossing that it makes you want to know how each character would overcome every challenge that they face.
Third: It teaches the basics of football. My dad was a football coach back when he was still alive. I am actually having regrets today as to why I didn't attend even a single practice of my dad’s team when I was still a kid. Not because I was not interested in the sport but it’s mainly because I had to focus on my studies. Unfortunately, it’s quite challenging to find someone who could teach me how to play today. I hope I can get out there in the field one day and score a goal, LOL!

Fourth: The characters are so lovable. My top favorites are the following: Isagi, Nagi, Rin, Niko, Bachira, and Barou. Moreover, I also love knowing more about: Karasu, Reo, Kunigami, Yukimiya, and Hiori. Seriously, people should read Blue Lock. It’s definitely a page-turner, believe me or not. I can’t wait to read the latest chapter and acquire different merch. I swear I will collect all of the manga volumes once they become available here in the Philippines. Also, I hope the anime would beautifully translate the chapters in each episode! You better give justice to Kaneshiro Muneyuki’s masterpiece!
