I started this show because of a wild clip I saw involving a gyaru telling the MC that she's going to "fuck him so hard he'll never think of his girlfriend again". With that being said its not hard to imagine what I wanted or expected from this show which is just a simple & entertaining time. To my surprise this anime turned out to be one of the most dramatic examples of why you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. Once you see the anime poster, the name, and the very shit ratings it becomes quite easy to assume worst. I don't know what everyone else saw but what I witnessed was one of the funniest romcoms I've ever come across. This show utilizes perverse humor to the max. It makes the likes of prison school look like childs play. The dub is one of the most legendary I've come across with its sporadic mix of so good its bad voice acting, occasional genuinely good voice acting, and a clear greenlight to have FUN and place their Americanized spin on the script. Though not as funny as the dub the sub offers a much more consistent experience. I often found myself switching back and forth the entire time. Even if you go sub I highly recommend replaying the funny moments in dub as they take already extreme situations and ramp them up x10. The story is a very simple & all too real one.. clique of HS virgins desperate to lose their virginity by any means necessary. We see the MC duped into asking a "gal" out by his friends with the intentions of finally shedding his virginity. This leads to an unexpected "yes" & 9 more eps (and an ova) of hilarious misadventures that occur thanks to this sham relationship. The comedy is more than enough to make this a rewarding experience for most but what really endeared this anime to me is how beautifully simple yet effect the series is. This romcom is a nice breath of fresh air from your typical acclaimed romcoms and their usual tropes. Its a very realistic depiction of the teenage mind & the shallowness we can carry at that point in our lives. I was surprised by the real growth the characters began to showcase in the second half. While at a point it may seem like a harem is brewing we eventually see friendship & a desire to see the MC succeed outweigh the secondary girls' lust which is an aspect I greatly appreciated & led to a certain bond amongst the cast that felt rewarding to see. At 10 eps the pacing felt amazing with little to no moments feeling out of place or as if they lasted too long. Make no mistake the comedy is the main selling point & by far the biggest factor in why I rated this anime so high but the series is surprisingly competent in other aspects. Several themes relative to the romance genre are present & delivered upon great albeit simple. But as I've said its the beautiful simplicity that I appreciate with this one. It doesn't try to overstep its limits and be something its not.. and in doing so it manages to be more than it seemingly ever intended. Lessons such as not judging a book by its cover & being more than your outwardly appearance, having trust in your partner, having confidence in your own self.. these are just a few themes that I grasped while watching. I'm sure not everyone will takeaway from this series the same things that I have (clearly, judging by the ratings) but I do consider my opinion to be a valuable one as I've seen my fair of shitty, decent, & acclaimed romcoms. I can say with full confidence this is an underrated & underappreciated gem when it comes to the romcom genre. Also the production is fairly decent throughout so its not as if its some sorta low budget pain to watch. This was one of my favorite binges of the year & a series I'm sure I will revisit many times. Though my experience seems to be vastly different from many others who've watched the show I do hope this review encourages someone to watch & hopefully enjoy as much as I did
