Summary
Oreki Houtaro a normal student looking to live a normal peaceful life is not allowed to do so as he joins the Classics Club and meets his fellow club members. Chitanda an ever curious being, his old friend Satoshi and Mayaka. They start to solve mysteries, small mysteries and end up getting involved in a 45 year old mystery that surrounds the Classics Club.
First Thoughts
At first this may seem as any other high school romance SOL, as it did to me. A quiet protagonist and a cheerful and extroverted girl thrown together. But this is anime is way more than that. After reading the synopsis and being proved wrong I came to realize that this, is not going to be any other high school SOL. And it proved to be more than that.
Cast OF Characters
A small introduction to the cast of characters. Oreki our energy saving protagonist. Chitanda the club president, ever curious and pure and innocent and the love interest of Oreki ( I will get to that ). Satoshi, Oreki's middle school friend and the " database " of the group. Mayaka, also a friend from middle school and the love interest of Satoshi.
Positive Points
The story is wonderful. The animation is great. The music is also great. The end? No. From the slice of lives I have seen this one was unique. How? This is not just about solving mysteries. The show does a great job of letting us understand the characters through their mystery solving, how the react, what their opinions etc. Character interactions and discussions have never felt so natural. The characters stayed true to their nature but went against them when necessary, when any human will. Romance was there, but was it not just blushing, shouting, inner monologues. The romance was natural as well - sometimes there is nothing to talk to, sometimes you cannot meet the eye. Surprisingly, countering to my thoughts I became interested in 45 year old mystery from a series so old, which is amazing because the event behind the mystery was not very grand but it felt like that which is a very tought thing to do, I have appreciate the author for that. Everything was well done, well executed.
Negative Points
The story can sometimes get slow and uninteresting. I agree with this. Sometimes it is to be close to reality you have to be boring. One character I didn't particularly like was Mayaka. I did not hate her, it is just that I was not able to see her more than Satoshi's love interest. Which is not really good since she had many points that should have been explored more - such as the manga club scene or how she liked to draw and other things. The ending also hit me a little since it made me anticipate for a season 2 which will never come. Other than that I have no problems.
