Let's Get Something Straight
The things that make a show great are the characters, setting, premise, and execution. Mushoku Tensei delivers on all of these and takes you on a journey of self discovery and growth in the process. Watch it.
Here's why:
I Am Bored of Generic Fantasy Settings. Is This Any Different?
Absolutely!
In a genre filled with generic, half-baked ideas, the setting of Mushoku Tensei is refreshingly plausible. The way that social classes interact is an amazing example of this. Often, when slavery is represented in media, we project modern moral standards on historic settings. Personally, I can't believe in a setting where only the evil tyrants own slaves. That is historically inaccurate. Mushoku Tensei does a wonderful job of handling this problem not addressing it. Servant's exist, but there is no political commentary on how awful it is or how evil slave owners are. This kind of seamless integration is refreshing and extends to many areas of the show, making it feel real and get lost in the rabble of fantasy anime with cliché goody-two-shoes protagonists in inexplicably perfect settings.
What About The Magic?
It is great... except for one thing.
The author tells us a good bit about the magic in this show, but instead of focusing on how it works, we see more of how it shapes the world and is perceived by the characters in the setting. This is all done really well! The problem is that the only two rules given on how the magic in this setting works are immediately thrown out the window. Oh, well. You can't win them all!
Are the Characters any good?
Yes, yes, a thousand times, YES!
Personally, I don't mind the harem and reverse harem genres. I was expecting to see some of that here, and I did, but the execution is on another level. While the early episodes play heavily into the main character's perversion, as the show progresses, I am impressed that these character flaws are dealt with well and are used for character growth. That is just the protagonist, though! Every character of significance in the show (with two exceptions) are surprisingly good and feel well integrated into the world. I would like share which characters are not, but that would be a spoiler, so sorry, just know that they get better or get left behind.
What should I expect?
A solid show.
Let's be real. There are holes in the plot here and there. There are characters that are more 2D than I would like. But overall, this show hits hard. Where there are weaknesses, they are often minor, and the strength of this show is its execution. I have seen dozens of Isekai (in another world) Anime and have seen almost every trope this show has to offer, but the difference is that this show builds up the scenes that would otherwise feel cliché to make them feel earned.
Last Thoughts
I understand if you can't get into the show because the protagonist is a pervert and a Mary sue at the beginning, but believe me that the show moves on from these weaknesses and uses them to show you what it is capable of.
