The strumming of guitar strings, the sparks that fly as metal fists clash and the constant puking of our very own Gearless Joe, sums up the first few episodes of this season. However, the character driven, contemplative nature of the plot put me on the back foot, as I had expected the same old grind. But to my surprise, the 13 episodes focused on both: the internal as well as the external struggle of Joe. The first half of the series focuses on Joe's relationship with a colony of immigrants who not only struggle with poor living conditions but also with the prejudice that the locals have for them. In his prime, 'Gearless' Joe showed these immigrants the dream that you can make it with almost nothing on your back if you apply yourself. Chief, the person who tasked himself with buying up the land for his fellow immigrants, took this dream to the extreme and fought in the underground. Here we see Joe fulfill multiple roles, that of a boxer as well as a second for Chief. The story of the hummingbird was paced well and narrated at the necessary turning points of the overarching plot. As Chief secures the necessary funds to buy up the place, he succumbs to his injuries and dies in his car. Which signified the end of that arc. This particular period led Joe to re-think his life choices and forced him to go back to the people that he abandoned. Our all grown up orphans are struggling to get by but they have found their respective purposes and most importantly, they have each other. Joe's return doesn't evoke a sense of happiness but only anger and resentment from most of his former comrades. But he remains steadfast and continues making an earnest attempt to make amends to the people he wronged. And here imo, the show starts shining brighter than its previous arc. We see old antagonists in a new light, a few moments of redemption which were impactful and most importantly, the megalobox formula of retro visuals coupled with modern music starts becoming more and more apparent. And this leads us to the marvellous 10th episode of this season. Where we have 3 back to back banger tracks along with Joe's and Sacchio's tryst with their own destinies as it gets intertwined and they reconcile their differences with each other to a certain extent. My only gripe with the show or rather the 2nd arc of the 2nd season would be the fact that it concentrates on 3 plot lines in a span of just 7 episodes. The flashbacks of the orphans, pops and Joe...the present day rivalry between Mac and Joe, and last but not the least, the behind the scenes of the whole rivalry , or to be more specific, the business aspect of things. While the show did manage to tie up all 3 storylines to the best of their abilities, I would have liked it more if the showrunners put more emphasis on the flashbacks and the rivalry + problems that Joe and Mac had in their own lives , and even lesser emphasis on the business aspect of things, or at the very least, taken more episodes to flesh out the other 2 plotlines more. But keeping this aside, I'd say that I loved this season of megalobox even more than the previous one. I grinned like a fool when they played the og megalobox theme in the final fight. It brought me enormous joy. And last but not the least, Humming bird - 2 Nomad -0, that son of a bitch not only has a beautiful voice but a way with words as well. Adios.
