"What is Platinum End about?" you may wonder. "Platinum End" is a survival death game battle royale series created by the legendary duo, Tsugumi Oba and Takeshi Oobata. If you weren't familiar with their names, they were the duo who created incredible and successful works perceived by the anime/manga community such as Death Note and Bakuman.
The story of "Platinum End" focuses on our protagonist, Mirai Kakehashi, who is a young orphaned high school student that lives with his abusive aunt and uncle after the death of his parents. One day, Mirai decides he cannot take it anymore and attempts suicide, but is mysteriously saved by an Angel called Nasse, who gives Mirai special powers (wings and arrows) after preventing him from committing suicide. Nasse reveals to Mirai that it was his aunt and uncle who were responsible for the deaths of his parents due to their jealousy and hatred toward them. After learning the truth, Mirai uses the powers that Nasse has bestowed to him in order to enact justice upon them. This is only the beginning of Mirai’s story as Nasse informs him that God will retire in 999 days and thirteen candidates to replace him were selected, one of which is Mirai. Mirai simply wanted to live his life in happiness after being saved by Nasse, but was forced to take part in the contest to decide the next God. Mirai now must face against twelve other candidates who are willing to do anything to win, including killing all of the other candidates as soon as possible. To combat these ruthless killers, Mirai forms an alliance with several candidates who share his goal: To win the contest without killing any other competitors.
I mean… If you read the first few lines of this review, you would find the answer to this. First things first, I need to ask this: What's with survival death game anime/manga series being absolutely horrible? We have Mirai Nikki, Darwin's Game, Tenkuu Shinpan, and now Platinum End. Is it that difficult to create a passable series of that genre? Possibly. This is probably how Platinum End was created:
When you heard that Tsugumi Oba and Takeshi Oobata were the ones who was behind Platinum End, you probably thought this series would be good, right? (Laughs hysterically) Rookie mistakes, my homies. Almost everyone thought that, myself included. However, this series was awful on so many levels that I wish it was a joke. If you told me that the creators of Death Note and Bakuman. wrote this, I would've laughed at your face and straight up told you, "I want whatever you were smoking" (and I don't even smoke). Forget a competent writer, if you told me an edgy fourteen-year-old wrote this series, I probably would've believed you. That's right, it was THAT terrible that you wouldn't think Tsugumi Oba was the one who wrote this series. Sadly, it was written by them.
To be completely frank, Platinum End is a mess. It's not even a hot mess because I didn't have a single thing I enjoyed from the series at all. It's the latest mistake and abomination spawned by Satan. What's wrong with the series? EVERYTHING! However, the most glaring problems the series had were the horrendous dialogues and the god awful characters, which we'll go over below.
Ah yes, the characters. The cast of characters with nonexistent personalities and acts indecisively every goddamn five minutes. I hated everyone in this series! Every single character was just so unlikable, man...
Oh boy, I never thought there would be a day where I meet a protagonist who is just as bad as Yukiteru Amano, who was agreed upon as one of the worst main protagonists in the history of anime/manga by many people in the community. Yet, he exists. Yukiteru has finally found himself a worthy opponent to contest him as “one of the worst protagonists of all time.” Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you: Mirai Kakehashi.
Mirai Kakehashi, the main protagonist of the show, is what people call a pacifist with how he acts throughout the series. He dislikes conflict and refuses to kill anyone, even Metropoliman, a ruthless killer and a threat to humanity. Mirai makes me feel so frustrated that I actually want to pull my hair out at times. Every time he says something, it's often illogical and nonsensical that I just want to strangle him to death. That's how insufferable he was. Hell, even though I didn't like Metropoliman, I was actually rooting for him, instead of the protagonist of the series because he actually has a pair of balls and has ambitions. Mirai was just wasted particles and he does absolutely nothing most of the time, despite being the main character.
"I’m afraid to attack someone. I’m a coward." - Mirai Kakehashi
That's pretty much him in a nutshell and even he, himself, acknowledges this. Mirai being a pussy wasn't the only issues I had with Platinum End. It was definitely one of them and it was a huge issue why I despise him and the show so much, mind you, but it wasn't the only issue. Another problem why I despise Mirai a lot is his indecisiveness. He got a lot of people killed in the process because he refuses to just simply fire his white arrow at Metropoliman due to him following his ultra stubborn belief of "killing is bad" when he's putting everyone in danger by not making sure Metropoliman is either killed or gets captured. Mirai, my dude, please tell me you're not an actual moron without telling me. Are you going let a sociopath endanger the ENTIRITY of humanity because of your own stupidity over killing ONE person? That's pure idiocy, man.
The cringest part of the series was when they introduced Hajime Sokotani (the ugly dude). The amount of cringe during the climax of the first half was unbearable... There was one instance where Mirai and Mukaido were flying around nonstop like idiots while being trapped inside the building as if they thought Metropoliman would be stupid and fall for whatever they were planning. There was obviously plot armor to save Mirai and Mukaido from their predicament because why wouldn't there be? While I don't care about the plot armor because there were 24 episodes total, so obviously, Mirai isn't going to die just yet; but the way they were saved was revoltingly bad and full of cringe that I can't erase it from my memory. I kid you not, Metropoliman lost a won battle due to Hajime going full simp mode and got distracted and shot by Saki's red arrow while she was wearing that stupid skimpy cat costume. Yeah... I have no words for how brilliant this show is.
"I won't kill you. I'm doing this for my own happiness. If any decent person killed someone, their guilty conscience would torment them until the day they die. They'd lose the ability to find happiness. I won't allow my happiness to be taken from me because I killed someone lower than a cockroach."
When I heard Mirai say this during his confrontation against Metropoliman, I knew he was beyond repair and I should just prepare to lose whatever sanity I have left for the rest of the series.
I won't go into too much depth into the second half, but if you thought the first half was bad, oh man, you're in for another surprise. The second half was pretty much just a drawn out nonsensical bickering about the existence of "God" that could've ended sooner if the characters weren't being absolute clowns. It was the most disgustingly pretentious thing I've ever seen. It makes me want to puke when the show was legit trying to use science to try make itself sound smarter than actually is. Yeah, I don't think Platinum End is fooling anyone that it isn't any more than an edgy pretentious pile of trash no matter how hard it tries.
Holy shit, my eyes! Please get me some bleach! Seriously, what in tarnation are those lines... Not only was the writing horrendous, but the dialogues in this show were extremely cringey and unnecessarily edgy. I’ve seen both cringe and edgy before and Platinum End just takes it to another level. Besides the awful characters, the dialogue in this show was one of the worst I've seen in my life. Here are some examples of the lines written by the legendary author, Tsugumi Oba, that any edgy fourteen year-old could’ve wrote. Take a good look for yourselves:
"No family, no friends. I have nothing to live for anymore."
"I have no family or friends. I can’t go on. Life is nothing, but pain. There is no hope anywhere in my future."
"We live so we can find happiness. Once we’re dead, happiness is out of reach."
"If I have to sacrifice myself, I’ll do so willingly for Saki."
"I don’t feel like doing anything that stupid and lame."
“It’s better to be fooled than to deceive others. It’s better to be bullied than to bully others. It’s better to be killed… than to kill others.”
WUT?
"Freedom? Love? It's all a fantasy anyway."'
“Everyone has to die… The world will just lose an insignificant guy who wants to take one last smoke before he dies.”
"Lies don’t mean shit when we’re trying to kill each other, idiot!"
...
Tsugumi Oba, ladies and gents.
Bruh, what the hell are these cringey lines…
Would I recommend this show? No. Never. Not even in a trillion years. I'm one of the biggest Mirai Nikki haters on this site and in the entire world, and holy shit, it's an unbelievable achievement to be just as bad or arguably even worse than that steaming pile of trash. Yet, Platinum End somehow manages to achieve that. Round of applause ladies and gentlemen. Bravo! Furthermore, it was created by none other than the legendary duo of Tsugumi Oba and Takeshi Oobata. I'm utterly speechless. I'm not a hater of them by any means, but they should have some guilt for creating this garbage. Why would they even do this to hurt their reputations? More importantly, why would they want to make us (the ones that watched the whole thing) suffer like this?
Platinum End was, without a single doubt in my mind, the worst show I've ever watched in 2021 and I've seen a lot of terrible shows. At least with the other bad shows I've seen in 2021, they were somewhat entertaining or were shows that were so bad that they were good. I got none of that with Platinum End. It was just me facepalming at the sheer stupidity in this show and me being frustrated for wasting 24 minutes of my life every week from consuming it. Anyway, if you want to torture yourselves, be my guest and watch this abomination. Be prepared to lose brain cells and your sanity from consuming it though. Otherwise, save yourselves the troubles and stay away from ~~Poop End~~ Platinum End. Thanks for reading and I'll leave it off at this:
Death Note, Bakuman., and Platinum End walk into a bar. There is an imposter among us. Can you guess which one?
