Amnesia is a complicated thing, especially to a person who's dearest to you. The question is, how can you treasure this person, even if that person forgets you over and over again? What will you do to make you feel special to that person?
One Week Friends is a romance drama show I watched 5 years ago. It's a story of a young boy who wants to befriend a mysterious girl that piqued his interest. But, he doesn't know she had a mysterious secret on why she's acting coldly to others. Now I think this isn't focused on the romance, but it talked about how powerful and sweet having a friendship was. This isn't the show where you can have a high expectations. You're just going to follow the ride that leads to a non-existent destination.
The story is decent and not forced. It follows Yuki Hase, as he befriends Kaori Fujimiya. But she had a secret; her memories will reset after one week and she will only forget the people that were closest to her. In short, her friends. Why though? It's because she had emotional trauma from her friends before the accident. If Tada Banri from Golden Time had retrograde amnesia, in which he could forget the present and remember the past, Kaori suffered from anterograde amnesia, which is the normal thing. But the unrealistic part from that point was the "one-week" period. I mean, it might happen to some people? Even 50 first dates rom-com movie by Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore is unbelievable. Like how the character of Drew Barrymore there forgets everything after a day? But I guess it depends on how the impact of the accident on the brain, right? The pacing was slow but surely developed. Plot-wise and emotionally intelligent. The concept was rather cliched but these points were impressed me;
The development of the characters was solid. In the first scenario, Yuki was shy and always wanted to run away from trouble. He kept on depending on his friend by joining him. But throughout the series, he learned to overcome everything and face his fears in many ways. He also matured in his way of cherishing her friends, even the best way to make others happy is to stay away from Kaori. The fact that he was an idiot was cute though.
Kaori is a great character. In the first scenario, she had these huge barriers that kept her from her classmates. She was an icy cold lady but after she met Yuki, she gradually became sociable with others. Not only that, she found the fact that having a friend can't be always fun and laughing with each other. She learned the sadness and pain of friendship, as she finally wanted to befriend Yuki, no matter how painful the situation between them, because of her sickness. Throughout the series, Yuki was always taking the initiating part in their friendship. But in the end, both of them were carrying each other because that's what friends are for, right?
As for the other characters, they were pretty decent too. Kiryuu was a good wingman to Yuki, as he always paid him some important advice. He thought him to be mature enough and how to handle huge situations, especially if Kaori was involved. He always speaks the truth regarding the situation of his friends. His relationship with Saki was cute and heart-warming. Kiryuu was a good character too because he didn't intentionally hate Kaori. He just didn't know about the sickness that she suffered but he seems he wanted to be friends with Kaori too.
The animation and the sound were good. As expected from Brains Base, they did a good job in animating the series. The show was filled with aesthetics and minimalist designs in every sequence. The style delivered the full emotional potential of the series. The sound was very heartwarming and it was suitable in every scene of the story. It felt very cozy and the feeling of having important friends. The performances of the seiyuus were great too. I remember this is the first anime that Sora Amamiya debuted on before Tokyo Ghoul and she sang the ED too. The OP was great and heartwarming also.
Overall, this show was incredibly great. The show felt me how friendship is important for every one of us, that no man is an island. It's a very heartwarming and cozy show, and I recommend it if you want a relatable romance, that will put a smile on your face from start to finish.
