It's just so satisfying to see an MC who grows through suffering as much as Subaru does be able to succeed. It's even better when its not only him doing the growing. The second half of this season allows many characters to show off how well written they are. But the biggest W has to go to Emilia. I was in that group who really didn't care for her in Season 1. But man does she get written into an awesome character once she is able to get over her fears. She goes from being someone who relies on others to, someone who is strong enough to be relied on in dire situations. And this the exact opposite of what Subaru has to go through on his development. He finally fulfills the idea that even with return by death that he can't figure out everything alone. He says this line in Season 1 but he doesn't really put this into practice until this season. “Listen, where I’m from there’s a saying, “3 heads are better than 1.” Wait, is it 2 heads? Whatever, the point is, 3 heads, thinking together are harder to break than only 1 arrow. It means you should rely on those around you instead of thinking about stuff alone!” – Natsuki Subaru. And trying to use the Witches for his answers isn't viable. There are so many others that he needs to rely on others no matter the burden because he isn't strong enough on his own. I just love the duality of the development for both of them. Then there is the matter of Ram's confession, which itself is a great scene for all characters involved.
A big chunk of this season ends up being flashback to help flesh out characters and its done so well. It doesn't feel forced or boring for any of them ,which I often feel can happen for stories. And don't even get me started on Choose me for Beatrice. I think the scene itself is just just stunning and the message behind it is outstanding. Re:Zero remains the only anime to make me full on cry with Parent and Child from earlier on in the season but this defiantly got me a bit teary eyed. Plenty of new characters get love as well. Garfield gets a satisfy fight showing off why he's a powerhouse. And best boi Otto really gets the love he deserves. This man single handedly sets forth the events that transpire and shows how well "background" characters can be utilized in a story with time loopy elements are. The man was literally so obscure that he is basically unknown to fate itself. Finally, the ending ,which much like season 1, ends on a happier. I feel for anime like Re:Zero ending arcs like that is generally the right move.
There are just too many amazing scenes for the characters to list them all. Plus the music, art style, and voice acting remained beautiful. The action also remained solid through out with one stand out fight as mentioned earlier plus it maintains the perfect amount of comedy. The season just wrapped up everything so well and had everything I wanted to finish out the season. I really hope a season 3 is announced sometime this year because after season 2 of Re:Zero, it has become my favorite anime so far.
