Never have I ever feel that a show could make me laugh out of joy, yet somehow able to bring in a 180 degree turn into a serious side of note. We rarely see a series that is able to write out of joy from the first few episode and ended up into a serious event turn of plotline. Ladies and gentlemen, we introduce you to arguably one of the most highly acclaimed show that the community has ever praised till this day. This is Gintama.
For starter, gintama has never been the look out for most anime watcher especially being a shounen genre type of show with the likes of other well-known series, but nonetheless there was still a good amount of people heard a word or two about this series. The core aspect of gintama is selling out as a comedy shounen show, where the main character, Sakata Gintoki who has nothing to do in life decided to be a freelancer (or known as 'Yorozuya' ) for the people who needed help in life, working with the likes of Shinpachi and Kagura. The trio would continue their lives with helping out any kinds of people there so long you pay them good money in order to do job that the people wanted.
Comedy has always been the core aspect for the show, yet somehow a comedic show could turn into the likes of a darker side of it. We have seen it many times that they did this drastically change of plot in the series, I'm not saying all of the small arcs has to do with what's coming next for the later story arc, but it as if they are building up a plotline for a major story arc later in the series, which makes the fan so anticipated for what is coming, and sure enough, a giant log has been hit into the likes of gintama.
Shogun Assassination arc has solidified as the greatest arc that gintama has to offer in the entire series, at least for me. With how well executed this major arc is, there was never a stopping point for me where I have to catch myself a deep breath with how intense things has gotten in the story, everything is just well planned and splendid, the openings theme, ending theme, the ost, and the pacing has never been a dull moment. The sheer intensity of the fight between Gintoki and Takasugi will always be my favourite part of the series, the amount of emotion there is was just immaculate to handle, at least for me. The build up from the earlier series has led to this one moment where they just clash as men giving it all their heart and soul into that fight, their sadness, their angriness, their lives as a whole are willing to sacrifice it because one couldn't come into the same page as others. When we are reaching the end of SA arc, the last few moment just made me have a mix amount of emotion, from sigh of relieve and a little bit of hope to emptiness and depression. Words just couldn't explain that last few moment of the arc and is pretty hard to take in.
But if you think that was over, hold your horses people. Not only we have one major arc in the end of season 4 but a second major arc in this season! How crazy is that?
Farewell Shinsengumi to me was also one of the best arc in gintama. Same as the SA arc for me, not a single moment I could take a break. It just keeps on hitting with these emotional fights and moment in that arc where one could not handle the outcome of it. The major suprises is Utsuro himself being introduce in that arc, the one that Gintoki looked up to since he was a kid, someone who he consider as the closest person he would ever open his heart to and hold dearly, ended up being the one who started this whole conflict of a situation. Everyhing just felt in vain in this FS arc, it felt hopeless, unwinnable and the point of even fighting it. Especially the two major characters that impacted this series a whole lot, it was just a mouthful for us to handle.
Even with the drastic change of plot line in this series, Gintama will always be crown as my favourite, if not the greatest show that I have ever experience, is as if I'm feeling like a little kid riding a roller coaster for the first ever while watching this show. The serious touch of story in Gintama has made this show as one of the GOAT to be seen for every people out there. A highly recommended show for people who are looking for a long running series, trust me you will not be disappointed.
This is my first ever review that I have ever done, so I'm really thankful if you did manage to spend sometime reading it.
