A wild ride that grabs you in its firm grip and doesn't let go. Panty and Stocking is enjoyable, if not anything else.
The portrayal of angels in Panty and Stocking is counterintuitive, and its fun. Angels that can do what they want when they want is entertaining. Also something about an angel sticking guns in ghosts faces and screaming, "Repent motherfucker," really gets me going. You may find Panty's obsession with sex and Stocking's obsession with sweets annoying. I normally find characters that base most of their personality on one trait annoying, however I thoroughly enjoyed this quirk with both Panty and Stocking's characters. If I had to give a reason, I think its because their quirks aren't useless to the story, they actually help develop it at certain points.
The soundtrack was way too good for a gag show like this. Fuck it, the production in general was way too good for a show like this. TeddyLoid fucked shit up on the soundtrack side. Fly Away Now had me boppin my head and shit when it started playing, I liked it so much I added it to my hype spotify playlist. The animation was scarily smooth, from the fight scenes to the scenic portrayal of Daten city. You can tell there was a lot of passion and enjoyment in the studio when Panty and Stocking was in production.
The voice acting was superb. I watched this in dub. I can probably count on one hand how many anime I've watched in dub, and I'm telling you its a must for this show. Funimation did a phenomenal job with the cast and the voiceovers. You could tell the cast really enjoyed themselves here, they poured their hearts into their roles, which made the voice lines that much funnier.
I've been looking for a comedy filled show for awhile, Panty and Stocking didn't give an ounce of disappointment. The edgy jokes, the sex jokes, the depressing jokes. There were all kinds of banter in this short 13 episode extravaganza, and I loved every second of it.
If I had to critique this show, it would be that there really wasn't development in the overarching story for the first 11 episodes. However, that wasn't really an issue for me since the last two episodes did a fantastic job developing and concluding the story.
Fun, if I had to describe this show in one word that the word I'd use. This show wasn't afraid of any boundaries, it let loose in every way possible, from its animation to its dialogue. Examples being episode five: where the show decided to get extremely dark and change up the animation style. The episode with the monkey lawyer, which was absolutely bizarre and hilarious. And the segment, Chuck to the Future, where the show decided to get eerily weird and horror like. I can really appreciate this switch up from the run of the mill anime. I feel that a lot of shows, even some I enjoy a lot, restrict themselves to certain standards. Seeing a show go against the norm, in an entertaining way like this, was really fun to see.
One of the best anime I've watched in recent memory.
