This series is one that i have mulled over for the last few weeks (closer to a few months by now) and i finally feel i have collected my thoughts on it to right confidently and effectively about my feelings towards this show. so here goes. also i will be spoiling some stuff but i assume most people know about the french revolution anyways so i doubt its anything new
This series follows the buildup and reasons for the french revolution of 1789 from the perspective of a fictional character by the name of oscar francois de Jarjayes, an aristocrat that was born female but due to his family not having any heirs she was raised as a man and tought the things that the men of the house were typically taught, for example swordplay(which she would go on to become heavily skilled in, politics, economics, etc). we see the story unfold from her point of view showing certain characters such as jeanne valois de la motte to have more 'evil' actions and to be a staple of her character, and characters like Marie Antoinette to be less evil and more sympathetic despite looking at thier actions from an objective standpoint you can argue that jeanne and marie were just as bad as each other as they treated each other and other third parties with alot of disrespect, which undoubtedly contributed to the rise of the revolution. So when you watch this series you come to understand that there are not any inherently evil forces at work, merely immature aristocrats attempting to climb the ladder of power by any means they seem fit and crushing those at the bottom, the famers, stonemasens, woodworkers and how these very same victims of the ladder of power react to being treated the way they are.
One of the most fun 'arcs' was the affaire of the necklace, which was about a very expensive necklace worth 2 million livres (approx 15 million dollars) to give to his lover madame du barry (jeanne). Du Barry was common born so it was a huge problem as it showed the nobles and the common born that the king does not care about them, which leads to the mojority of the conflicts in the story heating up from this point onwards and is a pivotala nd monsterously fun monet to watch unfold.
seeing oscar desperately try to keep the nobles and the commoner sin order was entertaining to watch as he himself is a noble the commoners refuse to listen to him and sometimes refuse to help him and refuse to accept help on many occasions, even in life or death scenarios, leading him to attempt to change the system and get help for the commoner s that way was a brilliant piece of wring as we see him eventually choose between the people of france or the arriscrats which contains the king and queen she swore to protect, his own family and also his lineage. Oscar is a brilliantly crafted three dimensional character that works perfectly as the portagonist of this already top tier story.
i cant go into more detail without flat out spoiling several plot points but i hope you get the gist
also the op is straight fire:

is this series for veryone? no, but if you like slow burner stories that explore historical events with surprising accuracy and fantatstic character development that rivals even the likes of joe yabuki and lelouch vi brittainia, then this story is 100% one that you must check out
