Dreams don't always come true. A tragic story of a "special" boy who risks everything for the girl he loves.
I never expected something this good when I saw this announcement. This watch gave me a lot of insight. What insight, you may ask. The insight to never doubt Trigger again.
Trigger went above and beyond with the animation. This is probably their most ambitious project yet. The soundtrack, the visuals, the character designs. Muah, phenomenal. I was pleasantly surprised the whole time I watched the show. I thought the show would have a shitty plot. WRONG. I thought the show would have a happy go lucky ending. WRONG. I thought the show would be mid, like the game. WRONG. It was awesome how wrong I was proven, this show is up there with Arcane, when it comes to Netflix originals.
Cyberpunk's fight scenes fucked. I loved the peculiar angles they used during fights. An example being how they picked a corner angle to show Maine bash three NCPD to pieces. Another being the slowed down scenes, which are then repeated with them in normal time. Trigger really outperformed any other anime so far this year when it comes to fight scenes. Incredible stuff.
The subtle world building was intriguing. Cyber psychosis is such a cool dynamic to have. It allows the story to have an insane amount of suspense, not driven off of action but instead off of mental fortitude. The opening scene showing what individuals with cyber psychosis are capable of is an exhilarating way to start off an action show. The world this show was set in was just so interesting to me, that might just be because of my love of futuristic fiction though.
I liked all the characters. They felt very real. The way they hid their pain and qualms from others was so realistic. Maine trying to tough out his psychosis, David trying to tough out his psychosis, Lucy trying to protect David all by herself. We are shown constant character flaws, which helps make the show feel more human, despite the characters slowly becoming less human and more machine like as the show progresses.
I love a tragic ending. Tragic endings are so much harder to come by than happy ones, and I hate it. Tragic endings leave way more options for how stories can end. They also leave you feeling something, making you think about the show for months to years after you finish it. This specific tragic ending hurt. Seeing Lucy alone hurt so bad, especially since it was her only wish for David to keep living. Unfortunately, it was David's wish to protect her from the city, even if it cost him his life.
Will this show get a sequel? Probably. Its been insanely popular and highly revered. Also, its ending leaves some loose ends that could be tied up with a sequel. The main one being what Lucy will do now. Will she try to avenge David? Or will she simply try to live out a quiet life? Obviously the latter doesn't give any motivation for a sequel so I hope its the former, and if they do green light a second season I hope they introduce more charismatic characters.
A fantastic watch.
