This is my first time writing a review so I might make a few mistakes, please excuse me for that.
___All I want so say before I get this review started is
PEAK FICTION!!!___
Best season of Gintama so far. Starting with the comedy, it was really funny and even when the jokes don't land (which rarely happens btw) you can just see it as the cast of characters being themselves and find enjoyment in that. All in all, the comedy is top tier and is better than most comedy anime I've seen like konosuba, nichijou, love is war and a few others.
But I think where this season really shines is in the Shogun assassination arc and the Farewell Shinsengumi arc. Both of these arcs are serious toned arcs and top tier Shonen arcs at that. I'd go as far as to say Shogun assassination is probably my top 2 story arc of all time (Vermillion war arc from the anime LOTGH and Surpassing the Leader from the Manga Usogui are tied at the number 1 spot). Just Gintoki's backstory would be enough to make this arc a 9.5/10 but its only one episode out of the 8 phenomenal episodes this arc had. 304-305-306-307 is probably the best stretch of episodes that I have seen in anime. All that foreshadowing coming to fruition was beautiful to witness.
Gintoki's whole character shines in Shogun Assassination arc (other characters do too). He is at conflict with himself. Should he really let Takasugi do whatever he wants to do because his hatred and malice towards the world is justified because the Tendoshu took what the students of the Shoka sonjuku school held most dear in their hearts; their Teacher Yoshida Shouyou, or should he stop Takasugi so that he can protect what he wants to the most; The Yorozuya and his friends?
Takasugi's character is really great as well as in he represents what could've been Gintoki in a different world, if he was not who he was. His urge to destroy everything and turn it into dust is not a mindless rage but malice that has been built over the years towards the bakufu for taking what he had held dear most, the only thing in this world he saw worthy of protecting. I'd say he is probably in my t5 antagonists, I like the concept of his character a lot.
Episode 304 and 305 have some beautiful match cutting scenes which reflect the conflict Gintoki is in and why he chooses to protect the things dear to him instead of avenging like Takasugi. I'd say episode 305 is probably the best episode out of any show I've seen (and yes that includes tv shows). Just a really amazing arc overall, I'd rate it 11/10. Farewell shinsengumi was a great arc as well. I would give it a 10/10. Gintoki is probably also my t3-4 protagonists of all time and one of my favorite characters so far.
I'd say this is a perfect season, It had everything I wanted in a show and Gintama is probably my top 2 anime now. I look forward to watching Rakuyou and Silver soul arcs (I've heard Silver soul is better than SA so yeah I'm very hyped and excited, to say the least). That's all folks, see ya after I finish Silver Soul.
