This review took me over a month to get some points out.
First watched this movie over a month ago in the cinema and blew me away that I binged the first two seasons again afterward. But now after taking some time to process it and 2 re-watches. This is my review:
MUSIC
Let's start off with the good stuff, the soundtrack is just absolutely phenomenal upping the already amazing music for Season 2, with more emotional beats.
The ending music too (Arigato No Hana), I listened to it on repeat for over a month now and it never gets old. Just one of the best tracks for a romcom IMO.
VOICE ACTING
What can I say 5toubun has one of the perfect cast lineups for a romcom, even better here. I swear sometimes I kinda wanna tear up a Lil bit. (Also c'mon Kiryu is here)
ANIMATION
While it's good enough and one of the main reasons I prefer Studio Bibury for the animation and art style, especially with the backgrounds and environments, the movie really doesn't look movie quality that much. But the animation was phenomenal for the final 30 minutes though.
PACING AND ADAPTATION
It's.... meh? The original manga was already criticized for being rushed in its final arc and condensing that to 2 hours was just asking for pacing issues like, individual moments only passing in a couple of minutes when in the manga it was longer. Even then it's still pretty decent as it still retains most of the core stuff in the movie. The pool arc was also condensed from 6 chapters to just the opening.
Now some spoilery stuff:
STORY
As I said in my previous paragraph the original arc was already rushed and because yeah it is. The conclusion was too early and some characters had to have their separate arcs be short and not that good. (referring to Itsuki and Bio-dad subplot) it's fine but the story would have been better adapted as a third season as it would flesh out the characters and story more. The whole festival arc thing leading to a confession is a tad bit cliche but it's good enough.
Honestly one of the things I didn't like is that it just.. ends right after the confession scene and leads straight into the wedding scene. (if you ignore all the bamboozle that happened inbetween that) Would have liked it if we were shown more into the lives of the other quints and even the chosen bride and Fuutaro.
CHARACTERS
most of the characters have gotten their respective character arcs concluded in a beautiful and fulfilling way for some, but not so much for a few.
ENDING
perfect conclusion no matter how rushed the build-up to it was.
