So you watched Wonder Egg Priority and thought the ending was incomplete and confusing. Now you’re expecting this special episode to make sense of it all, right? Or you’re like me and you thought the ending was awful and knew there was nothing that could fix it. The first 23 minutes of this recap the entire show, then the final 23 minutes add absolutely nothing but more confusion and explains nothing. Both the art and music are a downgrade here, with the latter barely fitting the tone at all.
The main characters spent the whole show trying to resurrect dead girls, requiring them to fight metaphorical monsters in their dreams. After they accomplished the final boss, the dead girls never came back to life. In this special, they were resurrected in an alternate universe—none of that was explained, we have to assume that’s what happened. The dead girls who were resurrected lost all of their memories and the timeline reformed around the heroines never meeting them. Does this imply all of the main characters cause the deaths of the resurrected girls? Who knows.
Ai Oto was in love with her teacher Mr. Sawaki, who is as close as the series has to antagonist. He was implied to be a pedophile, and in the final episode, he apparently caused Ai to commit suicide in an alternate reality. How did this happen? Is Ai in love with Mr. Sawaki as was hinted at in the original show? Is he still evil in the Special ending timeline, the results are unclear. The special doesn’t explore their relationship at all or condemn the pedophilia aspect.
Why did Ai’s friend commit suicide in the original timeline? This was Ai’s driving motivation, to begin with, yet it was never addressed. What does the show say about suicidal teenagers? ‘Well, teenage girls just get depressed sometimes.’ Just don’t watch it if you want a believable and delicate portrayal of mental illness. The supporting characters are barely addressed in the new content. Neiru turns out to be a robot, Momoe sings a little, Rika is still depressed, and Ai chooses to abandon her friends (by symbolically throwing away her phone).
Are the creators of Wonder Egg Priority satisfied with this clusterfuck of an ending? I know I’m not. I don’t think there is a single fan of the show who will benefit from this. In the end, Ai returns with an asspull twist all for the sake of a sequel teaser (even though there will never be a second season). This tacked on open ended finale somehow made the show even worse. Due to the series writer Shinji Nojima leaving the project, there will never be answers for everything left unexplained.
DO NOT WATCH THIS SPECIAL.
Just let the original ending be one of life's little mysteries!
