The first time I found this series was back in 2018, just when it was airing. I was a freshman anime wise and just sticked onto popular shows and isekai. This is why I ignored this show at first. I also happened to rediscover this anime a bunch of times later on, but I was discouraged from watching it by the anime community and friends opinions. Finally, today, 29th of December of 2022, while scrolling through my planning list and saw it once again, I told myself: “this time, im watching it for sure”.
Personally, I always thought and will continue to think that if an anime has good animation and well designed waifus, it means its a good show. I don’t care about the criticisms I get for saying that, cuz it has never failed: High school fleet, shadows house, princess principal, engage kiss… But not because they are not popular, or their rating isn’t high. All in all, these are peoples opinion, so don’t you even think about dropping a potential anime you will like only because some random dude said its bad. Try it yourself, and if it was not of your taste, cope with it, but at least you tried and that is what makes you stronger than others.
Well, after such a long introduction, its time to show my opinion about Island. At first I only started to watch it because I thought the white haired girl in the portrait looked good, my otaku instincts were yelling at me to watch it, at they would never deceive me. The show starts with a naked guy in the beach, he suffers from amnesia, but states he came from the future with the motive of saving someone. Here’s where I say, AYO WTH, the premise looks so good and the animation quality is so hella awesome that it literally gave me Summer Time Rendering vibes, so it made me wonder about the reason it is a 56% rating in anilist. After that, we are quickly introduced to the first waifu of the series, Karen Kurutsu, not much to say about her tho, my mind only cared about Rinne Ohara through the whole series, why? You would ask, yeah good question… Im a believer of love at first sight, the first time I saw her singing alongside the starry night was already enough for me to attract my full attention.
Story wise, is indeed confusing, but not as much as Sonny Boy, my mind is already corrupted by that anime so idk whats commonsense rn. But believe me, everything connects in the end. I saw a review about this anime saying it was slow paced, but I don’t really think its the case, every chapter brings in new knowledge and little fragments of memories of Setsuna’s past, from that you can make up your own theories while watching the anime and play detective while more mysteries are uncovered. Though,
Soundtrack wise, uhhh I won’t lie I can’t remember a thing about the OST throughout the series, but the song Rinne sings is truly memorable, I wasn’t really paying attention when the endings played so I also can’t have an opinion about that, but I can say the opening was amazing, I can’t tell why cuz im no music professional but I just thought it was really good.
Ayeeee, my review finishes here so ima make a conclusion if you don’t wanna read through all the text :p
Everyone has its own tastes so you may or may not like something, but I can only say that its better to watch it and regret watching it because it was bad, than not watching it just because others said it was bad. So always trust your otaku instincts, and if you think that a show is good, straight up watch it and don’t others opinion let you down! Overall, this anime has great animation and a complete story, I heard the visual novel was even better so check it out if you have the money.
Here conludes my review, take care!
