This anime takes place in Highland Kingdom, a place that used to be a nation of fairies. They lived there in peace for centuries. The humans rebelled against them and made the fairies their servants and treated them like slaves. They control the fairies by taking one of their wings. If they misbehave, then the humans can punish them by crushing the wings. There are also a lot of different types of fairies. Ann Halford is a 15-year-old girl who decides to become a silver sugar master just like her mother who passed away. Her goal is to become as good as possible and win the royal medal that is handed out at the sugar sculpture festivals. Ann bought a warrior fairy named Shall to protect her as a bodyguard. Her creations were inspired by a sugar apple fairy celebrity. She is against the idea of fairies being slaves and feels bad about it. Jonas, a boy who fell in love with Ann, goes with her on a journey. Sugar candy is a holy food in this universe. It lengthens the life of fairies and grants humans great happiness.
My favorite part about the anime is the relationships between the characters which makes the story a lot more interesting, also makes it way more personal and can resonate with the viewer and relate to them. I’m sure that the plot of the anime would be a lot less interesting if the characters were more typical and common. What I mean by this is for example that especially Jonas does a lot of things I didn’t even expect him to do at first and he also appears a lot out of nowhere at the least expected moments. Each character makes the story more personal and contributes to the general vibes and atmosphere and gives it much more of a personality. The teamwork between the characters is so satisfying to see, they work together so well and I love how close they are to each other it makes the story a lot more special and makes it go in unexpected directions. It’s fun to see the character development of the characters between every episode or few episodes and they evolve so fast and so much In such a rapid way.
Anne is a really mature empowering woman who never gives up no matter what she has to go through, the challenges she faces or how hard life gets. She is really kind to others, always loves helping out people and she is the mentally strongest of everyone and It’s really inspiring and motivating to see. She hates how the fairies are treated in the world she lives In and she is the one of the only people who never abuse fairies unlike everyone else. One of her main goals is to make a stop to fairy slavery as fast as possible and she tries to make it happen no matter what. She had to go through a lot of hard moments in her life and she kept pushing through no matter how hard it was and kept believing in herself and was always optimistic. It happened a couple of times that she had to make her sugar apple candy again because the bar is so high and the judges had way higher standards than the previous ones. She tried to find out what the judge wanted her to make because it’s pretty subjective like art instead of blaming the judge and seeing herself as a victim. She has the fastest and most impressive character development out of all the characters and she is my favorite character of the anime.
A lot of people think Shall is a companion fairy because of how gorgeous he is, but he is a warrior fairy in reality. He follows Ann on her journey to become the best at making sugar apple candies. He travels together with her and the others. The relationship between them makes the audience wonder whether they will ever fully get along or if the series will take a different direction.
Jonas is a boy who is in love with Ann. This is the reason why he wants to travel so badly with her. He is worried that she will get hurt and asks her if she wants him to protect her, but she refuses. They still go on their journey together. Jonas is also a sugar apple fairy with a proficient level in making sugar apple candies.
What sets this anime apart from a lot of other anime's is also the fact that the animation style is so pretty, especially the landscapes, the wings of the fairies, etc. It really feels like you are living inside a fantasy world yourself and experience everything yourself but from the characters their perspectives. Its also a really emotional anime to me and I feel all of the emotions the characters go through and all of the stress and hardships. Of course I also feel their positive emotions like happiness and the joy of spending time with your loved ones and there are so many other examples.
