If you're looking into watching Urusei Yatsura but aren't sure if it's worth it, this review is for you!
I'll mostly be jumping from point to point about the series. Final ratings will be based on my overall enjoyment, as that’s what seals the deal for me.
Brief Synopsis
After taking back earth from the Oni, and beating a certain alien in the process, Ataru Moroboshi's soon-to-be married life couldn't be any better. Except, that won't last for long, because Ataru's not married to his girlfriend, he's married to alien princess Lum! Strap in for an array of hijinks featuring some truly obnoxious people... Oh, and aliens.
Initial Thoughts
When it comes to anime reboots, I usually don't know what I'm getting myself into, especially if I haven't seen the original. This is the case for my viewing of Urusei Yatsura. Considering that completely absurd premises aren't my thing, I was a tad bit worried to see how this show would be. But I had heard good things, so I decided to give it a shot. And while my life has not been immensely changed, I found some parts I enjoyed.
The Meat of the Review
I'll start by saying that this series is incredibly unique. While pretty much everything about it is out-of-this-world bananas, that's just what makes it so entertaining. And even though I have not watched the original, I can tell you that they definitely kept the feel of it. This is a far cry from the anime that airs today, and that's a good thing. I'm all for some throwback comedy, especially when it is done well. And Urusei Yatsura is. First of all, the animation is splendid. Sure, it's not groundbreaking, but it's fluid, expressive, and a treat to watch. The bright color palette is probably my favorite part, it gives the '80s version a fresh coat of paint.
Now about that cast. because it's huge. I will say that many of these characters fall under pretty basic tropes, in that they don't have much depth to them. But then again, that's what makes this series so special in the first place, it's a bunch of stupid idiots doing a bunch of stupid shit. That doesn't excuse the lack of development though. Let's say one of the mains had an arc. It wouldn't be Ataru because that guy's never gonna change... but, you get the point. Something that puts them at odds, and not just a problem they can fix with a duel, but like, something that challenges how they usually think. It wouldn't be a lot necessarily, but it would be beneficial to the show overall. There's only one instance of that in the entire 23 episodes, and it makes it hard to be engaged with what's happening.
But that doesn't mean I doze off, in fact, a lot of times I'm wide awake, and that's mainly because the cast is so diverse. These people (and aliens) are all so different from each other, but they mesh well as a whole, and it makes for a memorable experience. However, I do feel that Ataru and Lum get to be a bit overshadowed later in the season. For a show that's about them, we don't get a lot of them compared to each character that is introduced. I know that this is an episodic show, but I would've liked a consistent plot at some point, especially since some episodes can really drag. While it's a pretty big downside, the colorful cast and on-the-nose comedy make up for it on occasion.
Overall Thoughts
Urusei Yatsura is a solid, surreal comedy. However, it doesn't make much except for the sub-par Saturday morning cartoon.
