It's good, like genuinely so, there are actually a lot of elements I like, but as the summary says, a lot of moments that rot my brain (and sometimes, not in a good way)
Let's start with the most "barebones" part of this anime, the animation: ![]()
It's solid by itself, but it doesn't have those "Haha crazy overexaggerated vibrant expression" moments unlike other typical romances, nevertheless, i still think that alone doesn't disrupt the experience too much since this anime's tone is very serious (although there are lighthearted moments here and there)
It's very simple, and fit the tone for the show in general, I like Cloverworks' direction on it.
The characters are cool, I like all of them: ![]()
for Sakuta: now, he has a quite tragic backstory at first (which is the reason why he has those scars in his back), he does have genuine emotion and care for people he meets, and more so the people in his house, but in the first like 4 episodes, he's pretty boring, and a bit too perverted.
speaking of people in his house, Kaede, now she is FAR less screen time than Sakuta, but that doesn't scratch her personality for even a bit, she may seem like a very cheerful child at first, but the final like 9 episodes are were her personality truly is shown.
Moving on to Mai, she was a very known actress, until one time, NOBODY notices her, not even touching or screaming at them could give the people a slight ounce of perception, because of that, she's a central core of the message this show is trying to make, talking about Adolescence Syndrome and Social Anxiety that is, even that doesn't stop her from having a heart, soul and the desire to be known by everyone once again.
Rio is also nice, and does help Sakuta on his mission into solve the Adolescence Syndrome that is present in Mai. Although the "Double Rio" thing is very confusing, it is thankfully resolved, particularly in episode 8
Later in the series, there are Tomoe and Nodoka.
Tomoe is the less relevant of the 2, and isn't very important to the plot a lot of the time, but her personality is likeable.
For Nodoka? being Mai's half-sister, she had a lot to live for and wanted to stand out WITH Mai, that sense of "hatred" (for the lack of a better word here) is shown VERY well in episodes 9 and 10, as she has BIG character development and is even motivated by Mai herself.
now next is the most confusing (good and bad ways too) part of the show, the story: ![]()
I like all of the concepts that this show provides to the table, but the execution is very hit-or-miss in some scenarios, ESPECIALLY the "Double Rio" arc, and can sometimes be VERY disjointed and bewildering to a lot of people
Overall, I recommend this show, although it's highly recommended to pay VERY close attention to everything and/or watch it 2-4 times in order to understand everything, otherwise, you will be perplexed.
