[MINOR SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN KONOSUBA SEASON 1 OFC]
So the streets called and said to binge Konosuba. I have seen the show a month ago and I have forgotten to put in a review, since I promised myself to put in a review from any anime I watch at this point, that's what I am going to do :3
So let's go with the pros of the show shall we.
Pros:
Animation- The animation is decent enough, but when the plot asks Megumin to show an explosion, it really fucking pops. I actually didn't expect Konosuba to be so well animated...well at least decently, but not this expressive and animated. The characters really shine with the animation and they make their jokes land quite well with it too. I don't have many complaints at all, the animation is just really good for a satire Isekai.
Story-
The story is about Kazuma being Isekai'd after dying of shock from saving a girl getting run over, except that she wasn't about to get run over, it was just Kazuma being overdramatic. Soon he finds himself in the afterlife with a goddess named Aqua and after some shenanigans there, Aqua ultimately and forcefully has to join Kazumas party in another fantasy world. Soon he finds himself having a braindead team follow him through a journey of trying (and failing) to defeat monsters to get stronger to inevitably defeat the demon king. Seems easy enough right? Well, yes this show is quite a slow burner. The story is simple and easy to follow and it has very surface level plot that anyone can enjoy. This series is more semi-episodic and more character driven than being story driven, which is fine. If you want a grand time with characters being funny and stupid with them ending up in some crazy shenanigans, I think you will enjoy it :)
Characters-
Now, I think the best part of Konosuba is the characters. This group of these stupid ass people are the funniest part. I have never seen a group so incompetent, yet also useful like this in my life. Kazuma is the leader of the group and seems to be the smartest of them, of course he has his faults such as being exploitative and manipulative towards his comrades, but of course it is for comedy purposes and for the most part it is Kazuma's own team screwing him over. He is also a pervert, so expect some panty scenes or some comedic sexual scenes as well. What makes Kazuma be the most interesting though, is that he seems to be a pretty decent guy who simply has had enough of his dumbass group. I feel bad for the guy most of the time, he gets fucked over by either his party or by shitty luck which is what makes his character funny. Bro deadass looks like he had enough of everyone's shit almost every episode and I cannot blame him XD, it is quite funny.
Aqua is the main culprit of being one of the most stupidest and insufferable character in the show. She is super selfish, arrogant, annoying, and a mega dumbass that I cannot believe she is a goddess XD Aqua causes problems for Kazuma 90% of the time and it can be quite hilarious. As annoying as she is, she can bring out the funniest moments in the show. She does have her cons for this, but we will save it. I also do not get why people say she is useless, sure she is useless in everything else but she honestly has done some things in the show that even Sakura couldn't do. I can count like 5 incidents where she actually helped. Sure that isn't much, but I expected far less due to everyone saying how dumb and useless she is for the ENTIRE show, which is an exaggeration imo.
Megumin is one of my favorite characters. Her ability to pull off some op explosions never ceases to amaze me. She does become numb for the rest of the day, but 1 strike alone from her explosions can create a fucking nuke to an enemy. She is quite silly, clumsy, sassy, and is the second mature one in the group. I actually like her character, she is charming and cheerful to see on screen. She has this sense of chaos in her that is funny to me and her character interactions towards the others are funny as well. She is the most op character in the group and makes the budget jump whenever she is on screen. W character.
Darkness is what every man and woman and they/thems simp over, and I see the appeal XD One thing you will know and the show never lets go is, she is a major masochist. Darkness's gag never leaves a second on screen because this girl is THIRSTY. She is honorable, hard working, independent, and EXTREMELY masochistic and sexual. She has less characteristics than the rest of the group, but her gags can be funny. She can also be lovable as she respects her teammates and Kazuma. Although, get ready for muting the TV because this woman is non stop moaning, she is sexual and thirsty 99% of the time, MORE THAN KAZUMA! I just hope my mother didn't hear that 0_0
Voice Acting-
I have heard that the dub is pretty good on this one and as someone who heard both, I agree. Both sub and dub are hilarious and I just know everyone had fun recording their lines in the show. Kazuma's Japanese voice actor improvised a lot in the show which heightens the comedic value of each scene, I respect. Megumins Japanese voice actress also improvises her lines as she spouts whatever cool phrase she can do during her explosions, which is proven by articles and interviews. Aqua is super chaotic in both dub and sub, which puts this anime up there with dub gems like Mob Psycho 100. Darkness is quite good too, I wonder how awkward it is for the actresses to speak her lines in the microphone XD Overall, everyone did a great job!!
Soundtrack-
There isn't much to add for the soundtrack as nothing stood out to me, just normal fantasy music you have probably heard a lot in fantasy/isekai anime. I do think the intro is quite good...a lotta honkers bouncing tho 0_0
Art Style-
The art style for Konosuba is so shiny and clean. The more animated comedy parts add to it as animators go off, but the characters themselves look very cutesy. The art style gave me a sense of adorableness and crazy exaggerated expressions mashed together that it actually works XD I like it a lot! It doesn't look as generic as most isekai anime I have seen and it gave me a enjoyable and nice cozy feeling.
Alright onto the Cons!!
Cons:
Although the story is simplistic and easy to follow, I feel like it is too easy. There isn't much other than adventures. The beginning of Konosuba was quite slower than I thought and it took some time for it to pick up, which personally puts off some of the steam I initially have for the show (I thought it was batshit insane right off the bat, like I didn't expect the crackhead energy to come later). Now its not a super con for me, I just didn't expect it to be slow in the beginning. It did pick up after like 6 episodes, so that's neat! Whether you think it is a con or not, this is just my personal opinion.
I thought that Kazuma became more of a pervert as the series went on and that transition put me off a bit, he was actually a respectable and calm man, but I guess they wanted him to have a gag and not him be just the straight man of the group, which is fine if you don't think there's anything wrong with it, its just a transition that personally made me ??. This is more of a mini con than anything else.
Now this is an actual big con I have with the show. The comedy. It is very funny especially the second half of season 1 when it picks up its steam, but some of the jokes just didn't land for me and some got me annoyed. Aqua is great, but she can be insufferable as a character and sometimes made me root against her. She can be funny asf when she can, but sometimes her entitlement and selfishness can be grueling for some people including myself. She does get better towards the end of season 1, but I still think she should just be banished to the shadow realm for 1 week to learn her lesson because she just berates poor Kazuma throughout the show XDXD Darkness is also a victim of annoyance in the show. Her entire gag is to moan for things she isn't supposed to moan for, like being stepped on or sliced by a sword. It can be funny, but the gag goes on and on and on and on. It's super repetitive and doesn't land sometimes. I found it to be annoying at points and I thought that they need to chill out with the Darkness scenes sometimes.
My enjoyment with the show was alright, it can be hilarious at times and sometimes I just roll my eyes, but I see the comedy picking up towards the second half. The show becomes its identity more at season 2 and the movie in my opinion, which is why I thought season 1 was good, but not GREAT y'know. Season 2 review will come soon.
Overall I think the show is pretty good, do not let the cons get you out of this, trust me there is more pros than cons! :3
I will give this show a 7.5/10, it is very decent for a comedy isekai anime, which is impressive considering its anime with comedy and isekai XD
Other:
I did not know Kazuma's VA is 40 years old, bro sounds like he is 19 what the fuck XD
