I will be honest here, the second season is better than this one, but I don't hate this show. It's wonderful, fluffy and filled with cute girls doing cute things! But for a while nothing happens and the plot is kind of slow. But I bet most people watching a semi obscure Tenchi Muyo spinoff aren't doing so for the plot. The show is best when it balances the cute stuff with the plot, that's why I prefer season 2. Generally, it does the whole big story beats and cute content balance pretty well in comparison. It's not at all important to understand the TenchiVerse so you can skip it if you're not feeling it. I don't think that the predecessor to this, Mahou Shoujo Pretty Sammy would be recommended if you end up skipping this show. Then again, it would take ages for me to explain what or why you should skip or not skip certain spinoffs. Haha! But that's besides the point. I as a casual Tenchi fan and a huge magical girl lover, I'd say that season 2 is better but this season is definitely not awful in my opinion. If you do plan to watch the show I wouldn’t skip this season entirely mainly just so you can get a feeling for the characters before season 2 adds drama into the mix. The issue is even getting your hands on the show in the first place, it can be rather hard to find the show online and getting ahold of the show on dvd can be pretty expensive. At least you can watch it on Crunchyroll and Funimation. But on Crunchyroll the dub is locked behind premium. Funimation doesn’t have the dub at all though. I still like it despite my gripes because it was one of my first anime I ever watched. But I will not deny that there are definitely better options out there when it comes to 2000’s magical girl content. Examples of such I’d personally recommend include Futari wa Precure, Full moon wo sagashite, Princess Tutu, and Sugar Sugar Rune. The second and third suggestions do get a bit dark at times and discuss some heavy themes. So if you really only wanted something fluffy without the heavy content I’d suggest you wait to watch them when you’re in the right kind of headspace. I wouldn’t skip them entirely though. They're Shoujo staples for good reasons, that's for sure!
Now its time to get onto the positives and negatives.
Positives:
❥Catchy intro.
❥Interesting hints of world building.
❥Huge amounts of cute girls doing cute things.
❥ lots of Ryo-Ohki screentime.
Negatives:
❥Has a lot of padding.
❥Not very connected to its source material.
❥ pretty slow and repetitive at times
Final thoughts, season 2 is better but I wouldn't go as far as to skip season one all together. And if this isn't your cup of tea you should watch something else like Princess Tutu, Sugar Sugar Rune, or Full Moon Wo Sagashite.
That’s all I have to say, bye!
