Well well well, look what he have here. At last the anticipated Demon Slayer season 3 has dropped and what is the current climate of the anime community this time? Absolute shit, that's what. Listen, I am on neither side of this divided group of people over this show simply because it is not as great as season 2. People who hate Demon Slayer go above and beyond to shit on it and have the nerve to tell us "YES YES, SEE!! DEMON SLAYER IS GARBAGE, SHIT, FINISHED, BURNED!! YOU FINALLY OPENED YOUR EYES IN THIS SEASON! WE WERE ALWAYS RIGHT YOU COCKSUCKERS". Listen mane, Demon Slayer haters really just need to shut the fuck up fr. Demon Slayer lovers also need to chill tf out, "OMG YAAASSS, BEST SHOW EVER ACTUALLY THIS SEASON IS A 10/10, NO MATTER WHAT YALL SAY! I WILL BLIND MYSELF FROM ANY CRITICISM OF THE SHOW AND PRAISE IT LIKE ITS THE SECOND COMING HOORAY!!" Bitch, put a sock in your mouth and go outside to touch grass, you mfs wouldn't shut the fuck up either. Worst season this, best season that, how about saying that this show is okay, maybe even good but....IT HAS FLAWS?!?!?!
People of both groups are overreacting and inhaling copium hard because what if I tell you that this season isn't the worst piece of fiction you've ever seen?? As a person who has to withstand 21 of spring anime, this season of Demon Slayer doesn't come close to garbage?? Seriously, it isn't that bad, but it does have its issues. I have seen far worse anime of this season and in counting, there are 7 anime, hell maybe even more than that than Demon Slayer season 3.
I'm not a hardcore hater nor am I a cocksucker, so lets get on with this shall we? Coming in with the Pros first.
Pros:
Animation-
The animation has always been spectacular in Demon Slayer. It is like an orgasmic experience except with your eyes, so to see people complain once again about the animation leaves me nothing but an empty feeling. Guys, there was always 3D animation done to the absolute limit in Demon Slayer, a couple of stupid looking 3D fish is what made you stop? I would argue that the Mugen Train movie had worse 3D animation than season 3, yet I see no one complaining about that? Makes no fucking sense and maybe it is why I should never go to anime Twitter, where fiends go to live in.
This season is no different than the last, when the plot asks for it, we get amazing animation that makes your eyes water! There is a difference though, this season felt more chill with the fight scenes than last which I do not mind, might be different for others but when a moment calls for it, then expect some goosebumps. The 3D animation is also really good! One of them being wooden dragons! The wooden dragons look very cool when they are wiggling around the forested area and fighting the demon slayers. I do have some cons, but I'll save it for that category. Let me just say that the special effects team deserves a raise.
Story-
The story in Demon Slayer has always been just general Shonen plot, like the other seasons. Just expect some good feeling adventures, training, long fights, and 1 goal at the end for the entire show.
This season we follow Tanjiro and Nezuko on a separate journey to the swordsmith village where he plans to retrieve a new weapon after destroying/losing his katana in the Entertainment District Arc. Tanjiro was planning to go back into training after his 2 month coma, which was gained from his experiences with Daki and Gyutaro. Little did he know, that the swordsmith village would be in danger after 2 upper moons were spotted near the area and wreak havoc amongst the quiet little 'secret' village.
Seems easy enough to follow right? Well you are correct, because that is all there is to it for season 3. Upper demons show up in this little village that Tanjiro was visiting, so it is up to him to stop them along side Hashiras, Muichiro and Mitsuri. The story seems quite bare bones and surface-level, but Demon Slayer isn't really known for its storytelling, it is more about the character developments, interactions, and abilities. The animation is also more known to it, but it's just Ufotable being Ufotable. Some people will actually like the simple story in Demon Slayer, and I agree with that. Sometimes you just need dumb fun to get you excited. The good news is that, season 3 was a massive 11 episode build up to whats actually going to happen in the next season (supposedly). The last episode of season 3 tells us the new objective for the show and how it can cause problems for our characters, and new character revelations as well! For now, this season is as simple as, 2 upper moons showing up uninvited to a secret village that Tanjiro and others are currently in. All of them then battle to the death to kill them.
Characters-
Unlike other seasons, this time it is just Tanjiro and Nezuko than the main trio (or quartet??), but despite that, we actually get more characters involved in this season than season 2. In season 2 we have Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke, and Nezuko as the main focus with their Hashira helper being Uzui Tengen. 2 of the villains being Daki and Gyutaro. Uzui's wives are minor characters, so they probably don't count. Well, this season we have Tanjiro, Nezuko, and Genya as part of the team with 2 Hashiras that I already mentioned. The villains being Gyokko and Hantengu, but the difference is that Hantengu can split into multiple demons called the emotion demons, so now we have Joy, Anger, Sorrow, and Pleasure with the exception of Hatred which is a blend of all emotions except Hantengu, who is fear. Of course I will not go over all of them, but I am going to call out the pros of the characters that matter.
Tanjiro is as heavenly and charming than he already is. Boy is so needlessly cute and nice, I am surprised he is still going despite what has happened in Mugen Train and Entertainment District. Although, he feels slightly different now. I noticed that Tanjiro is more aggressive and easily as angry towards his enemies than ever. As adorable as he is, he can be absolutely disturbing and a little psychotic in this season. Moments I recall is him creepily smiling when he figured out the weakness of one of the emotion demons, him seething at Hatreds logic, him going apeshit on Hantengu in the last 2 episodes. Unlike other seasons, he does not cry for these demons or even talk some sense into them in their final moments, he just utterly destroys them with hardcore anger. Which is nice, I actually like that side of him and I'm glad we get to see it more than just a couple of moments like him shouting at Akaza and him looking demented asf towards Daki in season 2 (he popped his blood vessels from sheer anger in moments :0). This might not mean much to some people, but it is actually cool to see Tanjiro show more emotion than be happe or cry buckets and instead be more aware of the situation and stop feeling some sympathy for demons. Big step up fr
Nezuko was always just a little character that would once in a blue moon join a fight or get out of her box. Nezuko actually develops more strength and fighting techniques in this season and actually contributes and joins the fight for almost the entire season! This to me a major step up because Nezuko would never leave her box unless Tanjiro asks her to. She did fight for like 2 episodes in season 2, but in season 3 she fights for damn near the entire arc. She also is starting to become smarter as she uses her blood art on Tanjiros sword to behead the emotion demons. She also shows how loving and selfless she is in this season, especially last episode. Honestly W for letting her do shit and FINALLY SHE IS ABLE TO SPEAK!
Genya is an interesting character for me. I actually forgot about him because bro hasn't come back on screen since the first few episodes of Demon Slayer season 1, so to see him back and grown was a big surprise to me. I also love he is voiced by Bakugos VA, which shows that they knew exactly what they were doing. Initially I thought Genya is an ok character, based on my assumptions in the first few episodes, but he actually managed to make me root for him. I thought he would just be the bully, the angry, the crazy ass character archetype I see in anime, like Bakugo for example. But no, he managed to make me raise my eyebrows. Genya has a special weapon that you probably saw memes of from the internet, that being his gun. Bro literally used American breathing style on the demons and I find that hilarious tbh. He also contributes to the team as he has a special ability to temporarily have demon powers when he eats their flesh, which is a neat ability to have and I like his demon look, he looks insane. What got me the most though is that this guy is not just full of anger, but he actually empathizes with Tanjiro and can follow through team work instead of going on his own. He literally sacrificed his body and turned into swiss cheese from defending Tanjiro from one of the emotion demons attacks, he deserves a bloody award too.
His backstory is also a cool factor to him as a character. He lived with an abusive dad that had suddenly died one day which left him with his mother and his siblings. His mother one day turned into a demon and killed almost everyone in his family except him and his older brother Sanemi, Sanemi with given no choice then killed his own mother with his hands, with Genya witnessing it. Genya has since then felt guilt and grief towards what happened, which included severing ties with his brother due to him not understanding the situation. Seeing Genya feel guilt, have mixed feelings and him feeling some type of empathy towards others feels more real than just being angry all the damn time. Seeing him smile at the end towards Tanjiros and Nezukos sibling bond touched my soul. Great character, I cannot wait to see more of him.
Muichiro is my favorite character of the season! Although admittedly he was done dirty by the pacing, which we will discuss with the cons. Muichiro was quite boring in the beginning and also a bit too rude towards others. Seriously, he just kept bullying the poor kid who was just trying to protect his machine, he also managed to piss off Tanjiro as well which is not an easy thing to do. But, as the show went on, he became one of my favorites :D Halfway through the show, we get a glimpse of what actually happened to Muichiro as he had some strange interactions with Tanjiro, like when his eyes sparkled when Tanjiro said something that reminded him of someone.
Muichiro lived with his mother, father, and twin brother in the mountains of Japan. His mother grew very ill as time went on, sooner or later, she died from the illness. The father then died as well when he tried to get herbs for medicine in a rainy day, he then slipped off a cliff and died. Muichiro had a twin brother, Yuichiro. Yuichiro has become more harsh and aggressive towards Muichiro after their parents died which caused some very bad problems between them at the time they were living alone in their house. After Ubuyashiki's wife contacted them for some demon slayer recruitments, both of their bonds severed even further when Yuichiro threatened Muichiro for even considering becoming a demon slayer. Not long after, a demon appeared to their home and killed Yuichiro after he tried to protect Muichiro from harm. Muichiro then went on a rampage from pure anger and killed the demon by strength, emotion, and full on rage. His brother then went on to die, with Muichiro holding his hand. Both were near death, but Muichiro was saved from Ubuyashiki's wife and the experience caused him to have amnesia for some time and only started developing his memories back since recent, which included his original personality coming back too.
Muichiro, who is at first thought to be emotionless and rude, turned out to be super emotional and a general sweetheart. He tried his absolute best even given the circumstances. His fight with Gyokko was nasty because bro wiped the floor with that fish molester. Muichiro was the first Hashira who killed an upper rank demon by himself, which shows his true potential. Not only did he wipe the floor with Gyokko, but he wiped his ass clean with the insults as well. Bro had no filter after that, he was straight up roasting the dude then continued to disrespect him with that fight. When his personality finally showed, I absolutely loved him. He is clean, disrespectful, savage, hard working, and an actual sweetheart (last episode definitely nailed that for me). He showed his support with Tanjiro as well and became more nicer and started to care more about the people around him. His backstory was probably one of the best of the season considering that we have a lot of backstories this season.
Mitsuri is a short, but nice one. Mitsuri is by far the sweetest character in the entire show. As much as she is not in the show until like the last 4 episodes, she steals the show whenever she is on screen. She is so badass and is incredibly skilled and agile when it comes to her unique whip sword! She has such a lovable and bubbly personality, it is hard not to like her. Her backstory isn't as crazy as the others, but it still contributes to her goals and personality.
It's simple really, Mitsuri was considered undesirable by men due to her strange hair color, independent personality, and is born physically stronger than most women. This is considered undesirable due to standards in women in the Taisho era back in Japan. She tried to change what entirely made her herself. In the end, she wasn't satisfied with her life even if she lied about herself to finally get married and have a man to be by her side. She wanted to feel loved for who she is and feel appreciated by, so she decided to join the demon slayer corps.
Honestly, her backstory resonates with me. I also have insecurities that I try to hide because of how society and people around me expect me to act. So Mitsuri's story is actually very inspiring to most women because so many deals with the same struggles as her. It is also nice seeing a woman Hashira for a change. I know there is Shinobu, but it has been quite some time after seeing them after the introduction in season 1. Mitsuri also handled the demons super well and might as well have killed and destroy all of them in one easy whip. Nice character, also her honkers are....impressive.
Gyokko is just a con....you will see him in the cons
I actually liked Hantengu, but more so his emotion clone demons. They are quite interesting and have unique powers. Unlike Gyokko, they actually gave the main characters some sort of struggle against them. I also liked their combined form, Hatred. His VA is Beerus from Dragon Ball so ofc I would like him XD His wooden dragons are so cool and his drums are also SUPER ~UNIQUE~. Is he better than Gyutaro and Daki? No, but I will get there with the con section.
I didn't expect Muzan to get a backstory so thats nice!
Voice Acting-
The voice acting in Demon Slayer has always been spectacular. So much guttural emotion coming out of the characters, which was enhanced by the performances of the cast. I am honestly not a fan of the dub, as it has less feeling towards it than the sub. I absolutely recommend watching it in Japanese because the acting is amazing. I absolutely applaud Natsuki Hanae's performance as Tanjiro, especially the last episode where my feelings were on fire. Everyone did amazing, but what I don't see enough is people praising Nobuhiko Okamoto's performance as Genya. I don't know how bro goes throughout the year without destroying his vocal chords, but he did amazing. His performance in episode 6 highlights his talent with his realistic screams of confusion and anguish to his calm and relieved voice in episode 11. Of course he growls and yells as much as he can because he is Bakugos and Accelerators VA XDXD Applauding for everyone!!
Soundtrack-
I don't know who told the musician to pop off like that, but HE DELIVERED. Seriously, the new tracks are so gooodddd. Hatreds wooden dragon theme and Nezukos theme towards the end are highlights in the music department!! Same with Mitsuri's theme, it has a slight bop to it and I see the sailor moon inspiration ;) We also have new sounding music with the emotion demons having their own weird little theme that I strangely like XDXD Anyways, great job!!
Now that we are done with the pros, let's go ahead with the cons. Like I said, the show has flaws.
Cons:
Animation-
As much as I defended the animation this season, I do have a small complaint. The fish attacks from Gyokko look a little too goofy and I feel like the could've blended it a bit better like the wooden dragons. It isn't a huge deal, but I would still talk about some of the cons. This isn't a huge con though, this is more of a mini con than anything.
Story-
Now I know Demon Slayer was always surface- level, but I do see the story get a bit messier here. The pacing is messy and needed work as the kept going back and forth between Plot A and Plot B with a lot of backstories. All of these elements are part of Demon Slayer, but they were handled a bit better in season 2. Like for example, Muichiro being stuck in a water vase for like 3 episodes with no progression other than needless and annoying dialogue. There was one episode where he was stuck in a water vase for 30 seconds in the entire episode and continued to focus on Tanjiros mission instead. Mitsuri didn't even show up a handful of times, it's like she disappeared for half the show and appeared out of nowhere when they needed her most. Another annoying thing is coincidences. Demon Slayer has a lot of plot armor and coincidences, but this time they really REALLY showed it in such as obvious way and I am not going to lie, that was a bit of a disappointment.
So many conveniences happened in this season that I lost count, but whats worse is the implementation of backstories. Demon Slayer has a lot of backstories, but season 3 implements them at the worst times. In season 2, Tengen gets his own introduction and backstory when things were calm and chill. Daki and Gyutaros backtories were implemented AFTER they finished the fight. In season 3, most of the backstories are shown around in some of the most random places. Like Genyas and Mitusris backstories were implemented DURING a fight not before or after which greatly impacts the scene as they are trying to fight, but gets immediately stopped for a flashback.
I also think that this season overall was a bit underwhelming than last season, but that could probably be because there wasn't as much of huge fighting like last season. This season is meant for more of a build up than going all out, which for some its pretty meh. I do hope the build up is worth it though since the plot took a turn.
Characters-
Gyokkos whole character belongs here as he is absolutely TRASH. Bro didn't even get a chance to flex that much, he got disrespected by two characters, got absolutely annihilated singlehandedly by Muichiro, failed to effectively kill him, failed to kill anyone on screen other than some swordsmiths in a vase. Bro was so garbage, that he is a rank under Daki for my personal villains list and I am not alone. He is supposed to be stronger than Gyutaro and Daki, but his ass sat down after some slashes with Muichiro. Not only that, but he is so disgusting and gross to look at and his personality ain't much better either. He is repulsive and his powers are just so lame. His personality is obnoxious and annoying, which is intended...but it doesn't make it any less unbearable. His demon form and demon art is artistically aquatic themed for sure, but thats all there is to it. His pride and ego was bigger than the Titanic, that this motherfucking fish molester failed to focus on his prey?!? His final form is even lamer as its just him but slimier and a snek. Bro couldn't even TOUCH Muichiro in his so called "final form". Muichiro wasn't impressed either so that should tell you something. Now I get that Muichiro is ranks above Tengen, Rengoku, and maybe even Mitsuri, but couldn't they have just made the fight just a little more epic? Put in some spice into it? Make Gyokko at least a little threatening? Bro even failed to kill a child, how the fuck is he upper rank 5?!?! Muzan should've just killed this mofo when he had the chance. This dude was so garbage, that Muichiro didn't even let him speak his last words AND absolutely no backstory for him, which is CRAZY for Demon Slayer. Garbage villain, garbage character, the only plus side of this is making Muichiro an absolute savage with his lines.
Hatred (I call him that because his name is too damn long) is a pretty neat character and I actually like the emotion demons, but Hatred and Hantengu as a whole is pretty much a 1 note villain. They are cool, but they don't have much personality other than Hatreds ideology being stupid and that he is powerful, Hantengu being a pussy 99% of the time and plays victim all the time. It is just....kinda boring honestly. They aren't as intriguing as Gyutaro and Daki. Honestly, the separate emotion demons are more entertaining than Hantengu and Hatred as a whole, but at least we get the goats next season for sure (Douma hunny, I am waiting for you). His backstory is also a bit meh, I don't think he needed it tbh.
The biggest cons for season 3 is the copium amounts of conveniences, the pacing being messy, Gyokko being the bane of my existence, and Hantengu being kinda mid :/
-I suppose, that'll be it for todays review, thank you for reading if you have made it this far and if you have anything to say, you can contact me through my Anilist ofc ofc.
People are overexaggerating about how bad this season was or how masterful it is. It is neither guys, it was just good, but not great. Hell, I may even say it was aight or ok. I know next season aboutta go crazy though, so excited for that ;)
I will give this season an 8/10, a step down from a 9/10 from last season, but still good enough to watch and have fun with.
Side note- I know this is talked about enough, but I cannot hold it in anymore. WHY ARE THE EMOTION DEMONS SO HOOOTTTTTT!! I'm tired of pretending that they are mid, they are not!! Pleasure and Sorrow/Sadness caught my attention the most and I just- GAAAAHHH!! Pleasure can violate me any day! And Sorrow.....DO HE WHIMPER IS THE QUESTION?!?!?1 EJGFWGFIEUWFGURFRUFIGB. Okay I will remain professional and civilized from this point forward now (not).
Thank you so much for reading and I will see u in....idk when I feel like it.
