Comedy is a very low standard to hit in the world of anime. I am not the first and won’t be the last person to say that most comedy anime aren’t funny. So, it was a joy for me to experience the anime known as golden boy. It was delight to watch this anime. I haven’t laughed this hard in a series for the longest time and especially not in an anime. This anime is the one that got me back into watching anime (probably, no promises). So, what makes golden boy such a good comedy anime? Honestly idrk fully, I just wanted to say that anime good. Onwards to the review.

What’s the most important character in any story? It’s the protagonist of course. Which all these new modern shows don’t seem to understand since they insert the most generic harem looking protagonist to their stories and call it a day. A good protagonist can make a story great while a bad one can do the opposite. Imagine vinland saga but instead of thorfinn, we get a whinny shy generic romcom protagonist. Won’t work as well would it? Now what would you imagine when I tell you that this anime features an perverted character? You might think “hey that sounds like a shit mc” but nope! I am glad to inform that Kintarou is an actual great character. He is perverted, yes. But it’s played to such an absurd level that it just comes off as a funny gag instead of coming off as annoying. Also, it really works for the joke because the entire joke is that this loser of a character is an actual genius in disguise. Underneath his perverted persona, kintarou is genuinely a good guy. He cares for everyone he meets and teaches an important lesson in every episode. Enjoy your life and don’t be too hard on yourself. Episode 3 is my favourite example of this. There’s no perverted scenes with him here. He is just trying to help this girl with her marriage to bring her happiness and he is doing everything for her and expecting nothing in return. That’s kintarou, he is a pervert but he is a good guy underneath all that.
I really like how this is really short too. I am glad that they cut it off at that as it really plays to the anime advantage. I read some chapters of the manga after the anime ended and let me tell you they weren’t that good. The avenger endgame style crossover with all the girls at the end was so well done. He just went off into the sunset. A perfect way to end such an anime.

And can we just talk about the animation for a moment?

Obviously, this is not the best animation in the world but for the comedy series like golden boy, it’s perfect. The expressions used and the timing is done to such perfection that every last frame will leave you smiling.
I rate this a “made a laugh” out of 10
