Rent-A-Girlfriend is overhated and underrated.

The plot of Rent-A-Girlfriend is one of the most unique and interesting plots in the romance and comedy genres. The main premise of Rent-A-Girlfriend revolves around Kazuya Kinoshita, a college student who had recently been dumped by his girlfriend. As he wallows in despair he eventually turns to the “rental” services and rents our other main lead, Chizuru Ichinose. The build up to the two main leads meeting up is probably the most unique premises among rom-coms. Chizuru is a rental girlfriend because she sees it as an opportunity to fund her acting career and to practice her acting skills. This is the perfect motivation for her character and it adds a whole new dimension to the plot. Not only is this about the character relationships, but also Chizuru trying to pursue her dream of becoming an actress and Kazuya rebounding from his previous break up. As of this review both Kazuya and Chizuru's journeys have yet to end, but each and every chapter of Rent-A-Girlfriend has been a fun ride with them.
The main cast are not the only interesting characters in the story though. The side cast of characters are just as interesting as our two main leads. The most prevalent of the side cast are Mami Nanami, Ruka Sarashina, Sumi Sakurasawa, and Mini Yaemori.
Mami is Kazuya's ex-girlfriend and acts as an antagonist for a majority of the story. She plays her role extremely well and adds tension to the series. She has a major presence in each and every panel she appears in. Even though she is the antagonist, she remains one of the most compelling characters in the series.
Ruka acts as Kazuya's secondary love interest. She suffers from arrhythmia and seeks Kazuya because he is the only person that has ever made her heart race figuratively and literally. Although as readers we know she is the secondary love interest it is hard not to root for her knowing her circumstances.
Sumi is also a rental girlfriend and one of Chizuru's friends. Sumi's shy personality makes it hard for her to talk to others, but as the story progresses she slowly but surely has learned to open up more. She also has come to both Kazuya and Chizuru's aid on multiple occasions. Sumi may not appear as much as the other side characters, but she delivers on all the panels she is present.
Mini is Kazuya's wingman and actively tries to push Kazuya and Chizuru together. Mini adds a fair amount of wonderful comedy to the series while also driving the plot forward. Despite being introduced the latest, Mini has managed to become one of the most beloved characters in the series.
The characters of Rent-A-Girlfriend are all fun to be around and seeing them interact with one another elevates the manga to a whole other level.
First of all, I want to thank Reiji Miyajima for blessing our eyes with his wonderful art. The art of Rent-A-Girlfriend is among the best of the best not only in manga, but also in art in general. Each and every one of Reiji's characters were given phenomenal character designs. Reiji's paneling is also perfect for a rom-com manga. He manages to perfectly capture the emotions of life. His double page spreads are among the best, if not the best, in the industry. The art of Rent-A-Girlfriend elevates the manga to a whole new level and compliments the amazing plot and characters.
Rent-A-Girlfriend is overhated and underrated. Hate has become a trend for others to follow. You can either follow the trend or make the decision for yourself. The choice is yours. All in all, Rent-A-Girlfriend is a modern day masterpiece and deserves to be recognized as such.
