#Better Feel than Alternative and Progressive. Above Average for Full CG.
##Summary
FLCL Grunge surpassed my expectations. I loved FLCL, did not love the 2018 FLCL, and was not optimistic about the new studio and Full CG. But it turned out to have a better story than Progressive and Alternative. And an animation style that wasn't boring. It's not pretty like the 2000, but the studio definitely put in effort to create it and it offers a lot of contrasting background styles. Much better fit for FLCL than the 2018 character designs that looked like a typical contemporary anime. FLCL should not look or sound like the other anime releasing now. I want uniqueness, chaos, and explosions.
##Exagerrated Hate
I would assume that the negative reviewers, since they chose to watch this show, would still take it over My Unique Skill Makes Me OP even at Level 1 and many of the other generic fantasy titles that compose 75% of the anime releasing at this month. Seriously, the worst anime ever?
##Plot: Uncomplicated and Chaotic
Compared to Alternative and Progressive, Grunge is more like FLCL in that you can enjoy what is happening in the moment, the tangential discussion or random action scenes, without thinking about an overall story. Every scene proves to be interesting and different from the last, which is a feat considering that it is the same story from different perspectives. I think the perspective change was a nice touch. Not unbelievable writing, but enough to give creativity. The set of tags are way different for each episode E1: Food E2: Gangs, Swordplay, Bullying E3: AI. So the element of me not knowing (or caring) what was going to happen next was maintained.
##Characters
Shinpei is undoubtedly the most similar to Naoto out of the three remakes’ characters. They did just enough to make my mind piggyback off my memory of Naoto to envision him as the next FLCL protagonist instead of a character from some random anime. Alternative and Progressive made me think I was watching a completely new series.
##Music
It is essential for FLCL remakes to consistently have the pillows in the background. Grunge had enough.
##Animation Style
If you are willing to watch anime in any style, FLCL has it all. Outstanding and memorable 2000 art style, typical 2018 art style, and now full CG. The CG does a good job of incorporating multiple different ways of doing backgrounds and maintaining consistency in the very un-anime character designs. The short achromatic manga-like animation in E2 was a good attempt, although it didn’t turn out great.
Reread my title. I am comparing it to other full CG. Much more visual contrast than many videogames and American shows. I enjoy watching a variety of animation styles. If you want to try full CG, I recommend Land of the Lustrous and the short movie anthology Short Peace with the legend Katsuhiro Ootomo.
