Three seasons. Rent-a-Girlfriend made it to three seasons. This is probably the most hated romcom of all time, and the reasoning is valid honestly. It's a pure degenerate fantasy for single men. Hot "girlfriend" off of dating app falls for degen, professional relationship turned fluffy romcom where both sides are interested but nobody makes a move. The manga is so atrocious that I don't even want to talk about it. This is a review for season three of rent-a-gf. And i'll give credit where credit is due. It's still trash, it's still abhorrent. But this is as good as it is gonna get without a doubt. If you like trashy romcoms, buckle up because you get that and more with rent-a-gf season three.
Let us start off with the plot: Chizuru Mizuhara's acting career is on the rise. As the star of this world, she wants to put her name out there and what better way to do that than a movie. Kazuya Kinoshita senses an opportunity, and thus, the movie arc begins. With the entire cast working towards one goal throughout the season, it creates some genuineness that really isn't present in the previous two seasons. It adds an element of attraction regarding the series that keeps you coming back for the next episode to check in how the movie is doing and one other significant plot point that comes later. Without spoiling, it is a major event and kind of depressing if I am being honest. Given the script of the series, as one big wish-fullfilment fantasy, I don't think anybody expected for the writing to turn like that, although it was only momentarily. Ironically enough, the series devoid of any morals explores the topic of loss and grief in a manner which was realistic and inspiring. Although slightly cliche, the main focus of this season was executed masterfully I dare say. If I was an anime-only (just quit while you are ahead), I wouldn't have expected such a turn in quality AND plot in season three given that season two was abysmal even in comparison to season one which wasn't great either. I can safely say season three is the best of the three seasons by a landslide and is probably the peak of the series.
Characters: Kazuya Kinoshita. Degenerate number one. I really hate his voice actor, the guy really gets on my nerves. Say what you want about him but I can't just bring myself to root against him. He doesn't really do anything problematic and he is geniuinely kind to the people around him. Yeah his character and personality doesn't have much nuance or development but he's very commendable when he isn't simping like a rabid dog, which is rare sadly. The other real main character is Chizuru and Ruka, Sumi only gets like two appearances so there isn't anything to talk about there. Season three is mostly plot driven so the characters don't really change, Chizuru and Ruka are still the same people as they were. Nonchalant for Chizuru and Tsundere/clingy Ruka. Nothing new here. Also a new character named Yaemori, I could stand her humor, but I could REALLY see a lot of people getting extremely pissed off by her.
Soundtrack/Voice Acting/Animation: Soundtrack is average mostly, maybe slightly above average. Good opening, ok ending, in the key/emotional moments I really liked the soundtrack. I HATE rent-a-gf's voice acting, it feels way too artificial, minus points for that. Animation was stellar, the special effects are really cool and mimic the manga very well, and it maybe outdoes the manga at times.
To conclude, if you stuck through the garbage that was the first and second seasons, I would honestly encourage you to try the third season. It wasn't bad and I mostly enjoyed it. If you liked season one/two, you will LOVE this. If you hated season one/two..... you probably weren't going to watch anyways. Final Score: 7/10. Thanks for reading
