86 is a thought provoking, captivating, emotional rollercoaster, which rose through the ranks of my favorite animes with its incredible storyline and characters. From its thought-provoking themes to its exceptional character development and stunning animation, 86, is an incredible and unforgettable experience that will definitely leave you with a lasting impression along with many tears (both good and bad). One of the best aspects of 86 is its intricate and thought-provoking storyline. 86 is set in a dystopian future where humanity is divided into two distinct groups – the Alba and the 86 – the anime explores profound themes of discrimination, war, and the consequences of dehumanization. The 86 The Alba The stark contrast between the privileged Alba and the marginalized 86 is perfectly portrayed, and the story goes on to show both social injustice and inequality. The Alba are a group that live in the city, being privileged and command the "86" group to fight for their city with the hopes and promises that once the finish their term fighting (mecha robots) they will be able to join them inside the city and finish fighting. As the series progresses, it delves deeper into the complexities of war, morality, and the blurred lines between right and wrong.
What made me really fall in love with 86 well-developed cast of characters. Shin also known as the "undertaker", is one of my favorite characters whose journey from a stoic soldier to an incredible leader is both compelling, emotional and one of the best character developments I have been able to see. The rest of the cast such as Lena, Raiden, and Theo, are also amazing character and they each go through circumstances, challenges, and each have their unique personalities and backstories that add depth and authenticity to the narrative. The relationships that develop between these characters although it start off quite difficult due to the inequalities already set in place along with the discrimination is heartwarming and heartbreaking in equal measure, making it impossible not to become emotionally invested in their struggles and triumphs. I shed tears quite a few times throughout the series both during heartwarming times and times during absolute heartbreak
As for animation 86 is incredible. The animation quality is consistently top-notch, with intense battle scenes that are fluidly choreographed and visually stunning. The frames are consistent and fluid using beautiful colors and each of the action sequences are perfectly done making it feel very real. The mecha designs are creative and much different than what Iw as expecting considering other mechas I have seen, adding to the overall appeal of the series. The character design and world-building is also very much taking note of as they were both amazing and really made you feel like you were fully immersed. Furthermore, the soundtrack of 86 compliments the series beautifully, enhancing the emotional impact of each scene. I will admit sometimes I was on the verge of crying and was able to keep myself together but when a song began to play I was no longer able to control my feelings any longer and would burst into tears. The music adds depth and resonance to the characters' experiences and it is played at perfect times. At times it's added in suspense, or doing action scenes raising the anxiety one is feeling. Other times it was added during very emotional scenes, making the mood even more somber and overall the music choices and times played were perfectly done.
Overall 86 is amazing overall with incredible storytelling, character development, and visual aesthetics. The way it was able to explore various theme, while provoking many different emotions really makes it a must watch. This series goes beyond the typical mecha anime and delves into what it is to be human, what is right and wrong, and it leaves one with a lot to think about once the seasons ends. Im not someone who loves the genre mecha a lot, but 86 is one that made it into my all time favorites due to its incredible story. I have recommend it to multiple people now and have not had a single complaint about it. Highly recommend this incredible series.
