This review contains spoilers, please don't make the spoilers go missing, just like the "mystery girl" from this anime.
Odd Taxi is basically about a walrus named Odokawa and the lives of the passengers he picks up, all leading into a mystery about a missing girl in a big city. So, let's take a ride through the world of Odd Taxi.
In a city of animals, Odokawa, being a taxi driver, discovers a mystery about a lost girl while driving in his taxi one day. Soon he gets tracked by the police and the yakuza as the anime goes on. Alongside that, we get to learn about the lives of the passengers, such as a cat named Tanaka trying to get addicted to a gacha game or an alpaca named Shirakawa learning capoeira.
It eventually ties in the final episodes, where Odokawa is threatened by Tanaka and Dobu, goes in a car chase against Yano, and discovering a condition that makes him see the world as animals in his point of view. The twist comes off as an epic, but also a goosebumping one.
Odd Taxi has a variety a characters, ranging from the quiet Odokawa, to the calm Shirakawa, and many more characters in it's cast of animals. As the series goes on, the characters gain more development, such as how Yuki was going to be the lead singer of Mystery Kiss before she went missing, or how Taichi catches events going on in the anime, and posting them online.
Even Tanaka gets some development in his very own episode, where we learn about his backstory. In his backstory, we learn about how he tried to get a rare eraser and how he got a rare species in a mobile game before he falls into despair cause his game didn't register it before the data crashed.
The visuals of the show look good, considering this anime was done by the studio who did the Pokémon anime, of all anime. Each episode really gives off that mysterious, but also calm vibe of the anime. Even the OP of the anime looks great and gives off the vibe of the OP song, giving off hints of what's to come for future episodes.
The soundtrack of the show, like the visuals, give off an mysterious vibe for the anime itself. And the OP gives off a laid back vibe, getting you ready for some adventures of the cast and the mystery surrounding them. The ED is also great, with a tone that's upbeat and fits the vibe of Mystery Kiss itself. Even Yano's raps throughout the show are great, setting his character and how he fits as a member of the yakuza.
Back then when I was watching not four, but a single episode of anime, this anime really made me think about what's gonna happen next to Odokawa as he goes on a mysterious adventure. Even the ending shocked me, seeing the cast of animals as humans really made me go "Wow, this is how they really look like as humans?".
Sure, this anime is full of a cast of animals, but it's a great anime to watch if you want mystery and animal characters in an anime full of drama and finding out who is the lost girl is. Think Durarara, but mixed with Zootopia, and you got this anime. Even if this anime takes you through a trip through Odokawa's life as a taxi driver.
