Kubera was a manhwa I started reading by chance, and my expectations for it were pretty low considering the fact that it's relatively unheard of as compared to other popular fantasy manhwa. It's genre officially is Fantasy/Romance, however, it has far more to offer even for fans of other genres. It has 3 seasons, season 1 being 100 chapters long, season 2 containing 180 chapters and season 3, still ongoing as I write this review, has over 300 chapters
Kubera starts off as a more light hearted action story (although the plot at the time seemed to be about revenge), with somewhat generic comedy. Season 1 was relatively unimpressive, although it consistently got better as more characters were slowly introduced and the depths of the characters increased. I will not elaborate as it would be better for you to experience it yourself as a reader
Season 2 continued with the same pace and quality that season 1 ended with, with slightly improved art. Season 2, like the previous season got better and immersive as the story went on and the cast grew and deepened. However, about 100 chapters into the second season, something started to seem off about one major characters. These feelings of uncertainty were proven right and eventually led to one of the best plot twists around the 150th chapter of the 2nd season. Suddenly the "humor" of the first 200 chapters did not feel humorous anymore, and the entire theme of the story became dark and treacherous. Suddenly, the story had become a lot better and season 2 finished on a cliffhanger of sorts, leaving the readers in anticipation for season 3.
The start of season 3 was immediately different from the other two, the positive vibe was nowhere to be seen, and the entire world just looked dark and gloomy. The art also had a massive improvement, leasing us to be able to immerse ourselves into the story more easily. As it was the final season, more of the story and world is revealed, with a large increase in the number of important characters. Pieces of lore and story were gradually revealed, each fitting into the large jigsaw that is the story of Kubera. As the story progressed, different characters make journeys through the world and they gradually understand the different events around them as they grow as people as well as in strength. The motivations of all the parties involved also become clear and even to the viewers, it is difficult to label many of the characters as good or evil. So far, as I'm writing this review, the story isn't complete and may not even be very close to completion, and so I will not make any comments regarding the ending
The story has 10 Main characters. They are:
One must also mention, that while the story is officially classified as a Fantasy/Romance manhwa, the romance in the story is quite lacking, as no romantic developments occur for a large part of the story, and when they do, they aren't in the focus of the story for very long. Kubera would appeal more to fans of Tragedy and Revenge, and to those who who love stories with expansive, immersive world building with a lot of plot and characters in it.
Overall I cannot help but give this story an extremely high rating.
While I would love to give it a 10/10, I must be more objective here so I will give it a 9.8/10
The only place one could say it was slightly lacking was in the art of seasons 1 and 2. Although i did mention that the story was relatively more unimpressive in the first part, it isn't a reason to rate the story any lower as a large part of it was intentional, just to make the twist near the end of season 2 even more shocking, and to make the sudden change in the story's atmosphere much more hard-hitting.
I really do hope that some of you give this story a try after reading this review.
Thank you for reading
