Imagine your friend telling you about how they got together with their partner, and they focus more on what they eat everyday rather than the details about how their relationship formed, this basically described the anime. I won't go into spoilers but this anime is just another cookie cutter shoujo bait anime with hot, tall and mysterious guys.
Akane got dumped by her now ex-boyfriend because her ex-boyfriend wanted to date his gamer girlfriend that he met in a game called FOS. Akane takes the break up not too well so when she found out her ex-boyfriend will be attending a real life event for the game she decided she will attend it as well and dress up nicely so she can make her ex-boyfriend regret having dumped Akane. But things don't go well and she ended up bumping into a person, tripping and falling on the ground when she decided to run when wearing high heels. But the person she bumped into is Yamada, a famous gamer and when Akane's ex-boyfriend saw him helping Akane to pick up her stuff, he talked to him about how he admired Yamada. Seeing that, Akane used the chance to brag about how Yamada is her current boyfriend and Yamada just goes along with it. After all that, they hung out together more often and Akane gradually realises she likes Yamada.
That was all in episode 1 don't worry. If you're like me you'd think that was a pretty normal start to a romance anime, but it just get blander and blander. First of all, I thought the anime was going to have the characters play FOS more because of the title having the word "Level 9999" in it and Yamada being a pro gamer and stuff but apparently not. On the contrary, the game didn't really have any purpose other than being a side story. It's like an anime with the title "Playing tennis with my hot girlfriend" but playing tennis is just a thing they do every Saturday once per month.
So after realising that, I thought the anime was going to focus more on Akane's glow up. Like she'll start to better herself up by improving her studies, have a healthier lifestyle, letting go of the past, stuff that'll boost her self confidence and Yamada being her mental support or something but nope. In one episode she did tidy up her room but that's also like a side thing and not really the main thing she does. Which made me confuse at what the plot is trying to do.
So, after realising all of that, the logical conclusion would be to assume that the plot will show Yamada and Akane meeting each other more often but also nope. Actually, they hardly see each other at the start. So.... what story is the anime trying to show us? Akane eating dinner? Yamada's daily routine? I have no idea, but everything wrapped up in the end so it's fine I guess. Also, there was a random character that popped up out of nowhere and they didn't affect the plot much... and they were introduced quite late into the anime... and then they just disappeared.
But aside from the story, the animation is also bland. It lacks color and it lacks energism. I watched one or two episode everyday when I'm eating dinner but if I was watching this in one sitting I'd probably fall asleep 6 times because Yamada is that type of "mysterious guy who says everything in monotone" and add that up with the lack of colors and upbeat music it's the perfect recipe for an afternoon nap.
I'm probably being too harsh here, but not everything is negative. Their music is good, like the OST and the ending song. Yeah that's the only positive thing I can say. 7/10. It's not good but it's perfect for watching when eating because I'm focused on eating more than I am focused on the story.
